Thanks to strong performances in the sprints and throws, the Pacific men's track and field team enjoys a victory at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open
PORTLAND – An outstanding effort by Pacific’s sprinting and throwing corps, led by victories from Michael Hunker (Fr., Cornelius, Ore.) in the 110-meter hurdles and Bobby Larkins (Jr., Forest Grove, Ore.) in the shot put, gave the Boxer men the team victory at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open, held Saturday at Griswold Stadium.
The Boxer men finished the day with 128.5 points, seven points better than second place Linfield for the team victory. The Pacific women also posted a respectable score of 93.5 points, landing them in third place in the eight-team competition.
Hunker led a number of strong performances in the sprints, capturing the 110-meter hurdles in 16.08 seconds while teammate Nathan Gilpin (Jr., Oregon City, Ore.) finished second with a Northwest Conference Championships qualifying time of 16.11. Gilpin also qualified for conference in the 400-meter hurdles with a third place time of 57.80 seconds.
Pacific received a third place finish from Jarred Franklin (Fr., McMinnville, Ore.) in the 100 meters in a time of 11.35 seconds, while Vince Mull (Fr., Beaverton, Ore.) was fourth in 11.40 seconds. The Boxers were second in both relays, clocking 44.22 seconds in the 400-meter relay and 3:34.99 in the 1,600-meter relay.
Larkins posted a breakthrough day in the shot put, winning the event with a mark of 47 feet, 1.5 inches. Murphy Busek (Jr., Mountain View, Hawaii) was second with a conference qualifying mark of 42 feet, 7 inches, and also qualified in the hammer with his third place throw of 136 feet, 10 inches. Ryan Culp (So., Woodburn, Ore.) was second in the discus with a throw of 128 feet, 2 inches while Kyle Stonelake (Jr., St. Helens, Ore.) was third in the javelin with a mark of 158 feet, 7 inches.
Chloe Hallyburton (Fr., Dayton, Ore.) led Pacific’s women’s performances with a victory in the high jump, leaping a conference qualifying 4 feet, 9 inches. Kasey Fisher (Fr., Denair, Calif.), meanwhile, set a school record in the pole vault with her third place finish of 9 feet, 6.5 inches. That broke the previous mark of 9 feet, 0.25 inches set by Summer Steenberg in 2008.
Haley Tank (Fr., West Richland, Wash.) placed second in the javelin with a throw of 117 feet, while Nicole Smith (Jr., Wailuku, Hawaii) was third in the 100 meters with a time of 13.37 seconds.
Pacific will take the next week off from competition. They will return to the track for the Willamette Invitational on Apr. 2 & 3 in Salem.
