ANGLIN FOR POSTSEASON HONORS: For two seasons, LeMar Anglin provided much of the muscle for the Boxers on the blocks against the toughest posts the conference could throw at him. His effort was rewarded with his selection as an honorable mention to the 2010-11 All-Northwest Conference Men’s Basketball Team.
Anglin led the Boxers this season in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage while starting 22 of 24 games played. He ranked in the top-10 of the Northwest Conference statistics in all three categories. Anglin was the only Pacific player elected to the team by conference coaches this season.
“I am very happy that LeMar was selected,” said Pacific Head Coach Tim Cleary. “From the time we arrived, he really bought in to the system and worked hard to have an outstanding senior season. (Assistant Coach Alex) Carlson did a great job of helping LeMar progress from an activity athlete to a legitimate scorer in the paint. I only wish we had more time to coach him as the improvement he showed in a short period of time was remarkable. He will be missed.”
Anglin provided a significant presence in the paint for the Boxers this season. He finished ranked fourth in the NWC with 7.2 rebounds per game and seventh in scoring at 16.7 points per game. He also ranked among the most accurate shooters in the league, ranking fifth in field goal shooting at 56.5 percent. He led Pacific in all three categories.
Anglin led the Boxers in scoring 10 times and finished with a double-double (points & rebounds) on five occasions. He scored a season high of 29 points against Pacific Lutheran on Dec. 3 and picked up a high of 11 rebounds on three different occasions, most recently against Evergreen State on Dec. 20.
In addition to his rankings in scoring, rebounding and field goal shooting, Anglin was ranked in the NWC’s top-10 in offensive rebounds (3rd, 2.83 per game), defensive rebounds (7th, 4.33 per game) and blocked shots (tie 10th, 0.50 per game).
MAKING THE BEST OF A TRANSITION YEAR: The first year under a new head coach is never an easy one as the head coach gets to know the players and vise versa. That was certainly the case for Tim Cleary as he came to Forest Grove for his first year leading the Pacific men’s basketball program.
The Boxers opened the 2010-11 campaign dropping their first three games, including a well-played, close 82-75 loss to then No. 5 ranked Carthage in a Thanksgiving Break match-up in Honolulu, Hawaii. Cleary finally notched his first win of the season in the second game of the Boxers’ Hawaii trip, scoring a 68-53 decision over Cal Lutheran. The very next game gave Cleary his first Northwest Conference victory with the Boxers scoring a 65-63 victory at Pacific Lutheran on Dec. 3 on a pair of LeMar Anglin free throws.
From that point, though, the road was a rough one for the Boxers as they won just two more games the rest of the season. The Boxers were rocked by a number of close losses that could have gone their way, including overtime losses at Corban and Evergreen State and a heartbreaking 94-92 double overtime defeat at home to Linfield on Jan. 14. Five of Pacific’s losses came by a margin of five points over less.
Pacific finished with a 4-21 record in Cleary’s transitional year. The Boxers finished ninth in the NWC with a 3-13 Northwest Conference mark. In addition to the Pacific Lutheran win, the Boxers took a decisive 87-67 win over Willamette on Jan. 7 and a 59-55 win over Whitman at the Stoller Center on Feb. 18.
CLOSE DECISIONS: Pacific’s season records could have been changed a bit had a number of close games gone the team’s way. Seven of the Boxers’ 25 games were decided by five points or less. Only two of those came as victories as the Boxers beat Pacific Lutheran 65-63 on Dec. 3 and Whiman, 59-55, on Feb. 18.
Pacific appeared to have luck on the other side in overtime contests, dropping all three extra time games that they played. The Boxers dropped an 80-87 decision at Corban on Dec. 17 and an 89-82 game to Evergreen State on Dec. 20.
No loss, however, hurt as bad as the 94-92 double overtime thriller to Linfield at the Stoller Center on Jan. 14. Pacific led by three as time ran down in regulation before Linfield post K.C. Wiser hit a leaning 25-footer with the buzzer sounding to send the game to overtime. Wiser went on to hit a lay-in to force the second overtime and then connected on a tip-in with three seconds left in the second extra period to win it.
BACK AT FULL STRENGTH: Carson Bartlett spent much of the 2009-10 season working to get back to full strength after suffering a season-ending knee injury the year before. In his first year under Tim Cleary, Bartlett showed that he was indeed back as the Boxers leaned on him for significant contributions at the shooting guard position.
Bartlett was the only Pacific player to have started all 25 games, finishing second for the Boxers with averages of 13.5 points and five rebounds per game. Bartlett finished the year ranked 14th in the NWC in scoring. Bartlett finished in double figure scoring in 17 games over the course of the season. His top effort came in Pacific’s victory over Willamette on Jan. 7 when he scored 25 points on 9 of 16 from the field. Bartlett also posted 24-point efforts against Linfield on Jan. 14 and George Fox on Feb. 4.
In addition, Bartlett finished the season as one of the conference’s top workhorses. He finished the season ranked seventh in the NWC in minutes played, averaging 33.8 minutes per contest.
AND AT THE OTHER SHOOTING GUARD: With opposing defenses keying on Carson Bartlett, Colin Wester found himself freed up to create some scoring of his own. Wester Played in all 25 games and made 21 starts as one of the Boxers’ wing players, finishing third for the team with an average of 12.5 points per game. He was also effective on the defensive end, picking up an average of five rebounds per game. In addition, Wester finished as one of the top free throw shooters in the league. His .794 free throw percentage (50-63) was eighth best in the NWC.
Wester registered double digit scoring in 17 of the Boxers’ 25 games. He poured in an amazing total of 37 points against Willamette on Feb. 5, connecting on 13 of 23 fro the field, 5 of 10 from three-point range and a perfect 6 of 6 from the free throw line. It was the best scoring performance since Garold Howe poured in 40 against Pacific Lutheran on Jan. 26, 2008. From the charity stripe, Wester finished perfect in 10 games and at one point went two weeks without missing a free throw.
STOP THIEF!: If Pacific had any one strong suit on defense this season, it was taking the ball away from their opponents. Pacific finished the year fourth in the NWC in steals, averaging 6.88 per contest (172 total). Carson Bartlett led the takeaway parade, ranking fifth in the NWC with his average of 1.64 steals per game (41 total). Colin Wester finished the year tied for seventh in the NWC, averaging 1.32 steals per game.
