NEWBERG, ORE. – The second half of conference play began with the welcome return of
Jordan Bodily (Sr., Eagle, Idaho) to the Pacific women's soccer lineup. Unfortunately, even with their leading scorer back on the pitch, the Boxers could not find a way past Alyssa Montero in the second half.
The George Fox goalkeeper had 11 of her 13 saves after halftime in a 1-1 Northwest Conference draw at Austin Sports Complex Wednesday night.
With the match tied at 1-1 at intermission, Pacific had 11 shots on goal to just two for the Bruins over the second half and first overtime periods, but Montero turned away every last one, reprising an impressive performance when the teams last met in Forest Grove. On that September afternoon, Montero made a number of spectacular saves and carried a shutout into overtime before
Kailee Green (Fr., Hillsboro, Ore.) tallied the game-winner in the 91
st minute. In two games against Pacific, Montero has 25 total saves, while allowing two goals.
Montero's counterpart,
Brittany Hartmann (Jr., Portland, Ore.), played all 110 minutes and collected six saves. Hartmann surrenderd the first goal of the match when Bruins' forward Melanie Gaither converted on a one-versus-one opportunity from 10 yards out, finding the time and space to initiate a number of fakes before sending in her seventh goal of the season after intercepting a failed clearance.
Bodily, who missed the previous four games resting an injured ankle, led Pacific with four shots, all on target. The Boxers only goal came from midfielder
Rachel Simmons (Fr., Mukilteo, Wash.), who converted on a loose ball scramble from close range in the final minute before halftime for her first collegiate goal.
One of the top teams in the conference in corner kicks, the Boxers held a tremendous advantage of 12-2, but were unable to convert any of their set plays into scores.
Shekema McCarthy (Sr., Davis, Calif.) nearly scored directly on an overtime corner kick, but Montero deflected it off the crossbar and back into the field of play. The Boxers had one corner kick in the final overtime period, but were unable to get away any shots over the final ten minutes.
For the match, the Boxers put an efficient 14 of their 19 total shots on frame. The Bruins had seven shots on goal with 13 total shot attempts, led by midfielder Esther Harder, who had four shots with three on target.
The Boxers return home to Lincoln Park Stadium for a Friday match against Lewis & Clark. The Boxer women kick off at 5:00 p.m. with the men taking on Linfield immediately afterward at 7:30 p.m.
