Box Score
FOREST GROVE, ORE. –
Shekema McCarthy (Sr., Davis, Calif.) had a goal and an assist and the Pacific women's soccer team dominated the second half in a 2-0 victory over Pacific Lutheran Sunday at Lincoln Park Stadium.
Limiting the Lutes (1-5 NWC, 2-6 overall) to one soft shot on goal in the first half, the Boxers (3-2-1, 6-3-1 overall) controlled possession throughout the second period, connecting on the game-winner in the 58th minute.
McCarthy made a long run up the left sideline before centering the ball to
Sarah Tuffey (Jr., Valencia, Calif.), who put a low volley through Pacific Lutheran goalkeeper Lauren Chambard for a 1-0 lead. Chambard dove on her line to her right and appeared to have saved the shot but it squirted under her, just crawling over the goal line before she could corral it.
Chambard survived two close calls in the preceding minutes, coming out to smother a
Shawna Kinilau (Fr., Waipahu, Hawaii) strike in the 53rd minute, while McCarthy sent a shot across the goal mouth wide in the 56th minute. Chambard finished the match with 10 saves.
The Boxers continued to attack, peppering the Lutes goal throughout the half, finishing with a season-high 23 shots, while holding the Lutes to seven shots on the match. Still, they could not breath a sigh of relief with a one goal lead until McCarthy scored an unassisted goal with a 10-yard shot inside the far post from the left side for her third goal of the season.
McCarthy led the way with five shots, while
Kailee Green (Fr., Hillsboro, Ore.) and
Tianna Homad (Sr., Seattle, Wash.) each had two shots on goal. Pacific finished with a 12-1 advantage in shots on goal. Karli Hurlburt had PLU's only shot on goal and led the Lutes with three shots.
Playing without leading scorer
Jordan Bodily (Sr., Eagle, Idaho), who aggravated an ankle injury in Saturday's 2-1 loss to Willamette, the Boxers showed no ill effects in bouncing back from a disappointing loss in which they led 1-0 in the first half.
“It was a good response from yesterday for sure,” said assistant coach Dane Christian. “The first half was still a bit flat. We definitely raised the tempo in the second half.”
Without Bodily's commanding presence in the middle of the field, the Boxers spread out wider on Sunday and used their speed advantage outside.
“We had to make sure that we had more width in play,” said Christian. “Sarah and
Emily Tuffey (Fr., Valencia, Calif.) did very well with a presence of speed and pace.”
Bodily is considered questionable for Pacific's next match against Puget Sound, Saturday, Oct. 8 at noon at Lincoln Park Stadium.
