Pacific held to two shots on goal in 3-0 loss

Box Score

WALLA WALLA, WASH. – Leland Matthaeus had a goal and an assist and Sam Freedman delivered two assists to lead Whitman to a 3-0 victory over Pacific in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match Saturday.

Pacific's Conor Peterhans (Sr., Seattle, Wash.) put a shot on goal in the first minute of play and the Boxers earned a corner kick shortly thereafter, but were unable to sustain that early momentum.

The Missionaries (6-4-0 NWC, 6-7-2 overall) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute, when Freedman's cross was deflected by Boxer goalkeeper Michael Summers (So., Beaverton, Ore.) to the top of the 18-yard box, where Matthaeus put it away.

The Boxers (4-5-1, 4-9-1) nearly evened the score in the 18th minute when Nick Rudella (So., Sammamish, Wash.) fired a shot that deflected off the crossbar. Barely 30 seconds later, Freedman set up Junpei Tsuji with another well-placed cross from the left corner. Tsujei met it on the dead run and drove it into the left corner of the goal for a 2-0 Missionaries lead.

The Missionaries polished off the scoring when Matthaeus put a long throw-in on the boot of sophomore Cooper Schumacher, who sent a low shot past Zach Cohen (So., Graton, Calif.) in the 57th minute. Cohen took over in goal for the Boxers in the second half, recording one save. Whitman goalkeeper Michael Bathurst needed only two saves to record the shutout, his fourth of the season.

Whitman outshot Pacific 15-6 for the match, limiting the Boxers to just one shot on goal after Peterhans' first-minute strike, a shot off the boot of Alex Arrington (Fr., Portland, Ore.) that Bathurst saved nearly 82 minutes later. Matthaeus led all players with three shots, while Schumacher placed two on frame for the Missionaries. Pacific's six shots came from six different players.

The road gets tougher for the Boxers as they head up U.S. 395 to Spokane to take on the Whitworth Pirates on Sunday.
