Box Score
SPOKANE – Sam Selisch doubled his scoring output for the season with a pair of goals as the Whitworth men's soccer team built a big early lead on the way to a 4-0 victory over Pacific in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match at Whitworth Soccer Field Sunday.
It was a bleak scenario to begin with for the Boxers.
Struggling offensively all season with a relatively unseasoned team, Pacific (4-6-1 NWC, 4-10-1 overall) made the long bus trip to eastern Washington this week to take on a pair of talented teams and had to do it without leading scorer
Patrick Murray (Sr., Hillsboro, Ore.) in both games. Another top scoring threat,
Devin Shull (So., Seattle, Wash.) also sat out Sunday's contest.
The Pirates (9-2, 11-3-1) dominated from start to finish, outshooting the Boxers 19-3 with a 12-1 advantage in shots on goal. With the win, Whitworth kept its slim title hopes alive, keeping pace with NWC-leading Pacific Lutheran a game back in the standings with three to play. The Lutes have already swept the season series against the Pirates.
Whitworth already had a 2-0 lead when Selisch scored his goals in a four minute span, putting a deflected kick past Boxer goalkeeper
Zach Cohen (So., Graton, Calif.) and later finishing a tapper off a cross by Andrew French in the 31
st minute to give the Pirates an insurmountable lead.
Cohen, making his second start of the season in goal for Pacific, recorded seven saves, while the Boxers troubled Whitworth netminder Brian Sherpe not at all in the first half. Second half goalkeeper Nate Bell made his only stop on a Brian Cholico shot in the 78
th minute.
Robby Ubben led the Pirates with four shots, while Nate Spangler put all three of his shot attempts on the frame, including a left-footed goal in the 12
th minute off a cross by JT Meyer. Whitworth's other score came on a Cameron Bushey free kick past the Boxers wall in the 17
th minute.
Hometown boy
Ian Farley (Fr., Spokane, Wash.) had two of Pacific's three shots in the loss.
The Boxers will try to regroup as they play their final three matches of the season at home, beginning Friday, Oct. 28 under the lights of Lincoln Park Stadium at 7 p.m. against Pacific Lutheran.
