PASADENA – The Pacific women's basketball team had a much better second encounter with the Beavers. This time, Pacific looked like the Division I team taking on the smaller school.
Less than two weeks after facing Oregon State in an exhibition mismatch, the Boxers romped past the Caltech Beavers 75-25 at Braun Athletic Center Saturday to finish off a 2-0 season-opening road trip to southern California.
The Boxers dominated defensively from the opening tip, although it took them a while to warm up offensively. In fact, neither team converted a field goal in the first six minutes as Pacific missed its first nine shots from the field. Meanwhile, the Beavers (0-1) struggled just to get a shot against relentless Pacific pressure, turning the ball over 11 times before Rachel Hess hit a jump shot with 12:23 left in the first half to end a 13-0 game-opening run by the Boxers.
For the second game in a row, Pacific held an opponent to just one made field goal over a 10 minute span, opening up a 26-3 lead in the first half on the way to one of their most lopsided wins in years. The 25 points allowed was just two away from a defensive record set in 2005, when the Boxers limited George Fox to 23 points.
Everyone played and 12 of the 13 players on the roster scored for Pacific, led by
Paige Jensen (Jr., Bemidji, Minn.) and
Nani Ostrom (Fr., Juneau, Alaska) with 12 points each. Ostrom played an efficient game in her second outing as the backup point guard, hitting 5-of-7 from the field and 2-of-2 at the free throw line with four steals, three assists and no turnovers. Jensen scored her points in just 14 minutes, adding four rebounds, while
Olivia Cook came off the bench to score eight points and pull down six boards.
Hess led all scorers with 13, but was one of three Caltech players charged with nine turnovers as the Beavers turned it over 45 times, leading to 51 Pacific points. The Boxers also outrebounded the Beavers 43-21.
Pacific returns to Forest Grove for its home opener on Tuesday, hosting Northwest Christian in the first game of a doubleheader at the Stoller Center at 6:00 p.m.
