SIX-GAME HOME STAND CLOSES WITH NAIA POWER EAGLES
The Pacific men's basketball team will close their season-opening six-game home stand with another tough test. After taking a close loss to No. 22 Puget Sound on Saturday, the Boxers will host the No. 13 ranked team in NAIA Division II, Northwest (Wash.), on Tuesday night. Pacific will aim to finish the home stand with a 5-1 record.
BOXER BYTES
•
Charles Mosley took charge from the free throw line Tuesday night, connecting on 12 of 13 from the line, including hitting 10 straight in the final three minutes, and led Pacific with a game-high 22 points to beat Linfield 76-67.
• Pacific finished off the Wildcats by hitting 48.9 percent (23-47) of their shots from the field and an impressive 92 percent (23-25) from the free throw line.
• Pacific kept pace with Puget Sound's aggressive dribble drive offense and pressure defense Friday, and were within striking distance of the lead in the final minutes, but the No. 22 ranked Loggers hit their free throws to down the stretch to preserve the 67-61 victory.
•
Colin Wester turned in another strong shooting performance, connecting for a game-high 21 points. Wester leads the Boxers and ranks third in the NWC with an average of 16.6 points per game.
• With Tuesday's victory over Linfield, the Boxers have matched their complete win total from the 2010-11 season. Where the Boxers went 1-4 in their first five games last year, they are 4-1 in 2011-12.
• After the first NWC weekend, the Boxers continue to rank among the top shooting teams in the league. Pacific leads the league in field goal shooting (.492), is third in three-point percentage (.375) and fourth in free throw percentage (.726).
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
NORTHWEST (WASH.)
The Eagles enter the week with an unblemished 9-0 record and were ranked 13th in last week's NAIA Division II National Poll. Northwest continued their roll through the first third of season with their first Cascade Conference victory on Saturday, collecting a 93-56 victory over Evergreen State. The Eagles rebounded from an early first half deficit to cruise to the win. Jordan Call's 18 points and seven assists led four Northwest players in double-figure scoring. Last Saturday, the Eagles dropped a close 78-74 exhibition decision to NCAA Division II Western Washington. Northwest led in the first half, but trailed by just 76-71 with 38 seconds to go. Call led Northwest with 22 points while shooting 47 percent from the field. Call leads the Northwest offense with an average of 15.6 points per game per game, shooting 43 percent from the field. PACIFIC NEWS & NOTES
CHUCKING IT UP: While Pacific benefited for double-digit scoring from four of their starters on Tuesday's 76-67 win over Linfield, it was the shooting of
Charles Mosley (Jr., Hillsboro, Ore.) that truly secured the Boxers' win. Mosley led all scorers with 22 points, connecting on 5 of 7 from the field. The junior forward did his most damage, however, from the free throw line where he connected on 12 of 13. He hit 10 straight charity shots in the final eight minutes of the game and canned eight straight in the final minute as the Wildcats fouled to gain back possessions. Mosley continues to perform as a much improved performer over his sophomore season. He ranks third for the Boxers in scoring with 13.3 points per game and is the team's top free throw shooting at 78.1 percent. Mosley enters the week ranked third in the NWC with 25 free throws made (he is 25-32) and ranks fifth in the league in rebounding, leading the Boxers with 6.6 boards per contest.
COLIN ALL SHOOTERS: Colin Wester (Jr., Sherwood, Ore.) continues to be the Boxers' most consistent shooter on the floor early this season. Wester enters the week ranked third in the NWC in scoring, leading the Boxers at 16.6 points per game. He is tied for fourth in the league with a .500 three-point percentage (6-12), is fifth in three-pointers made (14), sixth in steals (11) and ninth with a .549 field goal percentage (28-51). Wester turned in 14 points in the victory over Linfield on Tuesday, hitting four three-pointers to go along with six rebounds, two assists and two steals. He led all scorers against Puget Sound on Friday with 21 points on 6 of 16 from the field and 5 of 6 from the free throw line. Wester played all but six minutes total in the Boxers' two conference contests last week.
BOXERS PLAY ON WITHOUT BARTLETT, BEATTY: Pacific will move on through their 2011-12 season without two of their most experienced players.
Carson Bartlett (Sr., St. Helens, Ore.) suffered a season-ending knee injury on Pacific's first day of practice on Oct. 16. The injury occurred on the opposite knee that he injured three years ago. Bartlett was Pacific's second leading scorer during the 2010-11 season at shooting guard, averaging 13.5 points per game while making a respectable 47.3 percent of his shots from the field.
Andrew Beatty (Sr., Lynnwood, Wash.), Pacific's starting point guard, was lost for the year when he broke his right wrist in hard collision and fall taken in the Boxers' win over Walla Walla on Nov. 26. Beatty proved an expect so far in the year in running the Pacific offense. He averaged three points and two rebounds per game and had nine assists and four steals against just three turnovers. Beatty, who transferred to Pacific from Skagit Valley CC in 2010, is expected to apply for a medical hardship.
COBY AT THE POINT: With the season-ending injury to
Andrew Beatty, the Pacific coaching staff has turned to
Coby Proctor (Fr., Sublimity, Ore.) to handle the point guard duties. Proctor has performed well in his first two games pressed into service. He scored nine points in 36 minutes of action in the win over Linfield on Tuesday, which included a 7 of 8 performance from the free throw line. His line also included two assists, one steal and no turnovers. Proctor added four assists in the loss to Puget Sound on Friday while playing in 26 minutes of action. Proctor, who played his prep basketball at Stayton High School, was a Second Team Oregon 4A All-State selection in his senior season.
ADDED HEIGHT HASN'T HURT: The addition of a true post presence in
Dustin Bowser (Jr., Bellingham, Wash.) had paid positive dividends for the Boxers. Bowser had his two best games thus far for the Boxers in the two league games last week. He scored nine points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds in the win over Linfield on Tuesday. Against Puget Sound on Friday, Bowser scored 11 points and had six rebounds, two assists and a block. Bowser, who stands 6-foot-8, joined the Boxers this season after two years of community college ball at Whatcom CC in Bellingham.
WINNING: It's five games into the season and Pacific has already matched their win total from Head Coach
Tim Cleary's first year with the Boxers. At 4-1 this season, Pacific has matched the four wins accomplished by the 2010-11 campaign. The Boxers began that year by going 1-4, earning their first win in a 68-53 neutral site victory over Cal Lutheran in Honolulu on Nov. 27.
SOLID SHOOTING TEAM: Pacific continues to be one of the best overall shooting teams in the league after the first weekend of NWC play. The Boxers are ranked first in the NWC in field goal shooting, hitting 49.2 percent of their shots. The Boxers rank third in three-point shooting at 37.5 percent and fourth in free throw shooting at 72.6 percent.

PACIFIC PICKED NINTH IN NWC PRESEASON POLL: Northwest Conference coaches have picked Pacific to finish ninth in the league this season according to results of the annual coaches poll, released on October. The Boxers received 10 of a possible 80 votes in the poll. Coaches voted for all teams but their own. Whitworth, under new head coach Matt Logie, was picked to win third straight NWC title. The Pirates earned six first place votes and a total of 67 points. Up-and-coming Whitman was picked second, earning three first place votes and 61 points.
