Pacific Gets Offensive Outburst in Home Opener
Box Score
FOREST GROVE-- The Boxer offense showed its strength while putting on a show for the home crowd, topping the Walla Walla Wolves 5-0.
In the first half, Pacific (3-0-0) netted five goals off the feet of four different players. Jorge Mandujano (So., Cornelius, Ore.) scored the first goal in the fifth minute off a free kick at the top of the box by Jasem Jaihouni (Sr., Portland, Ore.). Kizamu Tsutakawa (Sr., Seattle, Wash.) scored the next in the 23rd minute off a rebound shot by Jaihouni
Offensive substitutes got in on the action in the first half as well. Kody Ganiko (So., Makawao, Hawaii) scored in the 26th minute off an assist by Travis Birrell (Sr., Seattle, Wash.). Freshman Nick Rudella found the goal unassisted in the 39th minute and then again in the 42nd minute off another Birrell assist.
The Boxers took a 5-0 lead into halftime, after outshooting the Wolves (0-3-0) 27-2.
“We played a disciplined game,” said head coach Jim Brazeau. “Players did what was asked and the first half goals were a result of that.
The offense slowed in the second half, but Brazeau got a chance to get reserve players some playing time. In addition to the starters, 13 players saw time in the game. “I was happy we could get everyone in,” states Brazeau. “It will only help us going into the conference schedule.”
Andrew Stevermer (Sr., Gillette, Wyo.) had one save in the first half and was relieved early in the second half by Eric Baker (Fr., Shoreline, Wash.), who added another save for Pacific. The two goalkeepers combined for the 5-0 shutout of the Wolves.
The Boxers hit the road to take on Cal Lutheran at noon of Saturday and UC Santa Cruz at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Both games will be hosted by UC Santa Cruz.
