FOREST GROVE—The Pacific men's tennis team fell to Puget Sound 5-4 to open Northwest Conference play at Holce Tennis Courts. The Boxers won two doubles and singles matches.

“It was a very disappointing loss for us,” states head coach Brian Jackson. “We had some momentum going into singles, but couldn't close out matches.”

The Boxers (1-1, 0-1 NWC) took two of three doubles matches from Puget Sound (1-0, 1-0 NWC) to start the day. Spencer Hing (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) and Troy Zuroske (Fr., Richland, Wash.) defeated Michael Cutter and Nick Kelley 8-6 in the No. 1 spot and Patrick Kinghorn (Sr., Salem, Ore.) and Alen Suklje (Fr., Portland, Ore.) won 9-7 at the No. 3 spot beating Alex Harrison and Andrew Timmons.

The only loss suffered by Pacific in doubles play was at the No. 2 flight with Michael Okada (Sr., Hilo, Hawaii) and Scott Kawamura (So., Aiea, Hawaii) falling 8-6 to Scott Finkleman and Brent Hoshiba.

In singles play, Puget Sound took the upper hand, winning three of five matches. Hing fell 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Finkleman at the No. 1 spot. Okada followed losing 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 to Cutter in the No. 2 position.

Freshman Zuroske picked up Pacific's first singles win 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 over Kelley in the No. 3 flight. However, Puget Sound picked up another win at No. 4 with Harrison defeating Derek Cooley (Fr., Vancouver, Wash.) 6-2, 6-2.

Eric Furuya (Jr., Portland, Ore.) picked up the Boxers' second individual win in the No. 5 position with two 6-1 wins over Brian Burger. His brother, Michael Furuya (So., Portland, Ore.) followed with a 7-5, 6-0 lost at the No. 6 spot to Hoshiba.

“Puget Sound played very well. They fought extremely hard, and were able to make some great adjustments to beat us in a number of matches,” Jackson said. “It will be a great test to see if we can bounce back tomorrow morning against Pacific Lutheran.”

The Boxers will be back in action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. at Holce Tennis Courts against Pacific Lutheran.
