Boxers Bounce Back Against Lutes

FOREST GROVE—A day after falling to Puget Sound in the Northwest Conference Dual opener, the Boxers defeated Pacific Lutheran 6-3 at Holce Tennis Courts.

“The guys bounced back really well from yesterday's disappointing loss,” said head coach Brian Jackson. “That was a big step in our development. The guys did really well battling the cold and wind and playing more up to their potential.”

Pacific (2-1, 1-1 NWC) started strong in doubles play winning two of three and were able to carry the energy into singles play and win four of six flights.

The Boxers received wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles and lost No. 1 doubles to Pacific Lutheran (0-2). Michael Okada (Sr., Hilo, Hawaii)and Scott Kawamura (So., Aiea, Hawaii) combined at the No. 2 position to defeat Zack AhYat and Neal Berg 8-6. Patrick Kinghorn (Sr., Salem, Ore.) and Alen Suklje (Fr., Portland, Ore.) defeated Daniel Cotton and Reed Gunstone 8-3 at the No. 3 spot and Spencer Hing (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) and Troy Zuroske (Fr., Richland, Wash.) fell 8-5 to Taylor Dickey and Scott Sheldon at the No. 1 position.

In singles competition, Okada fell to Dickey in the No. 1 spot 6-0, 6-3 and Eric Furuya (So., Portland, Ore.) fell to Berg in the No. 5 position, but the Boxers won flights No. 2, 3, 4 and 6.

Hing defeated Scott Sheldon 6-0, 6-3 at No.2 and Zuroske beat AhYat 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3. Derek Cooley (Fr., Vancouver, Wash.) won 6-2, 6-4 and Suklje picked up the 6-1, 6-1 win over Gunstone at No. 6.

The Boxers will play at Holce Tennis Courts again tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. against Whitman.
