Pacific Splits Season Opening Duals In Tacoma

TACOMA, Wash.—The women's tennis team traveled to Tacoma to open the season with a dual against Puget Sound in the morning and Pacific Lutheran in the afternoon. Pacific lost to Puget Sound 5-4, but bounced back to defeat Pacific Lutheran 7-2.
Against Puget Sound (2-2), the Boxers (1-1) picked up one doubles win and three singles wins. The junior duo of Cat Goya (Kaneohe, Hawaii) and Megan Yoshimoto (Mililani, Hawaii) defeated Maddison Holtz and Maddie Thiesse 8-4 in the No. 1 doubles spot. Both Goya and Yoshimoto also added individual wins over Holtz and Thiesse, respectively. Goya beat Holtz 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 position and Yoshimoto defeated Thiesse 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2. Rachel Mizuno (So., Mililani, Hawaii) added the Boxers final win at the No. 3 flight in a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 victory over Jenna Gerdsen.
In the afternoon at Pacific Lutheran (0-2), Pacific won all three doubles matches and the top four singles matches. Goya and Yoshimoto combined again at the No. 1 doubles spot to defeat Leah Newell and Tina Aarsvold 8-3. Mizuno paired with Stephanie Velligas (Sr., Waimanalo, Hawaii) to beat Hailey Rile and Deanna Ellmer 8-4 at the No. 2 flight and Kelsey Trujillo (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) and Traci Mo (Jr., Kapolei, Hawaii) had an 8-4 victory over Caitlyn Hoerr and Saiyare Refaei at No. 3.
In singles competition, Goya, Yoshimoto and Mizuno picked up their second wins of the day. Goya defeated Newell 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1, Yoshimoto won 7-5, 6-4 over Tina Aarsvold at No. 2 and Mizuno beat Refaei 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 3 flight. Trujillo added the fourth Boxers win at the No. 4 spot with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Hoerr.
For their next match, the Boxers will travel to McMinnville, Ore. on March 4 to take on Linfield at 3:30 p.m.
