HONOLULU, Hawaii – Tim Cleary earned his first victory as Pacific's head men's basketball coach Saturday as LeMar Anglin (Sr., Chicago, Ill.) turned in another big effort in a 68-53 victory over Cal Lutheran Saturday in the Surf's Up Classic at Kalani High School.
Anglin led all scorers, turning in a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds on 8 of 15 from the field. He led another solid shooting effort for Pacific (1-3) that saw the team shoot 48.1 percent from the field (25-52). The Boxers also out-rebounded the Kingsmen (2-1) 45-38.
Carson Bartlett (Jr., St. Helens, Ore.) added 12 points, nine rebounds and six assists while Andrew Beatty (Jr., Lynnwood, Wash.) finished with 11 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Greg Grimm led Cal Lutheran with 18 points. Aaron Fisher added a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds. As a team, the Kingsmen shot 28.6 percent (18-63) from the field.
After Cal Lutheran led early to begin the contest, the Boxers pulled ahead by four on a Beatty three-pointer three minutes in. Pacific would never trail again, going up 19-13 on a Cameron Hayes (Fr., Milton, Wash.) three-pointer and eventually built the lead to 12 points on Charles Mosley's (So., Hillsboro, Ore.) lay-in with 1:57 to go. The Kingsmen closed the half on a 5-0 run to trail 32-25 at the half.
The Kingsmen cut the lead to five to begin the second half, but the Boxers quickly built the lead to 15 points by going on an 11-1 run. Anglin and Colin Wester (So., Sherwood, Ore.) each had four points in the rally and Hayes ended it with a three-pointer to put Pacific ahead 43-28 at the 14:50 mark.
Kwaminique Brandon's trey on the next possession sparked a 15-5 run that put Cal Lutheran within striking distance of the lead. Grimm closed out the spurt with a lay-in with 7:47 left that had the Kingsmen within one at 48-47. Pacific would not shake their opponent until back-to-back lay-ins by Mosley and Bartlett, followed by an Adam McElwee (So., Woodinville, Wash.) three-pointer, extended the lead back to nine, 59-50, with four minutes left.
The Boxers allowed just one Cal Lutheran field goal over the final five minutes of the contest, allowing Pacific to build to their biggest lead of 15 points at the final horn.
With their Hawaii trip at a close, the Boxers will now turn their focus to the opening weekend of the Northwest Conference season. Pacific opens the league schedule at Puget Sound on Friday before playing at Pacific Lutheran on Saturday.
