NEWBERG, Ore. – Pacific's new and improved track squad made a big impression in their first meet of the season Saturday as the Boxer men were winners and the women finished second in the season-opening George Fox Frank Haskins Invitational, held at Colcord Field.
The Pacific men easily won the competition in the four-team field, scoring 270 points and besting second place Linfield by 139 points. The Boxers won nine events, including two wins each by Michael Hunker (So., Cornelius, Ore.),
Aaron Koford (Fr., Wilsonville, Ore.) and Murphy Busek (Sr., Mountain View, Calif.). In all, eight different Pacific men earned qualifying marks for the Northwest Conference Championships in six different events.
Pacific women compiled 159 points, finishing behind the winning total of 173 points scored by host George Fox. In all, eight Pacific women's athletes established NWC Championships marks in eight different events.
Hunker won both hurdle disciplines, capturing the 100-meter hurdles in 16.53 seconds and the 400-meter hurdles in 59.15 seconds. Koford led a 1-2-3 finish for the Boxers in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 8.75 inches while also winning the discus with a mark of 129 feet, 7 inches. Busek was a winner in the shot put with a mark of 43 feet, 4.75 inches, and in the hammer with a heave of 144 feet, 3 inches.
Other Pacific winners included John Cushman (Jr., Lakewood, Wash.) in the 800 meters in 2:02.79 and John Fredericks (Sr., Forest Grove, Ore.) in the pole vault with a mark of 12 feet, 5.5 inches. Kelson Kawai (Fr., North Kohala, Hawaii) tied for first in the high jump, clearing the bar at six feet.
Pacific received two individual victories on the women's side. Jenna Matsumoto (Jr., Kailua, Hawaii) won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 17.31 seconds, keying a race that saw the Boxers sweep first through fourth in the event. Matsumoto was also a close second with a time of 1:09.90. Kelli Aken-Pagdilao (Fr., Makakilo, Hawaii) captured the 100 meters in her first collegiate event, winning in 13.41 seconds.
Sam Lee (Sr., Fort Wayne, Ind.) finished second in both the 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters. Lee was runner up to former Pacific All-American Kelsey Owens in the 1,500 with a time of 4:53.39 and finished the 5,000 with a time of 18:20.77. Kasey Fisher (So., Denair, Calif.) was second in both the 100-meter hurdles in 17.41 seconds and the pole vault with a clearance of 10 feet, 4 inches. Punneh Abdolhosseini (Fr., Seattle, Wash.) was second in the 800 meters in 2:30.01 and Nicole Smith (Sr., Wailuku, Hawaii) was second in the 200 meters in 28.57 seconds.
The Boxers return to action next weekend, taking part in the Linfield Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker next Friday and Saturday in McMinnville, Ore.
