FOREST GROVE – Clackamas CC's Michaela McNairy and Western Oregon's Jake Hyde braved driving rain all day to capture top honors in the multi-events at the Pacific Preview, which finished Sunday at Lincoln Park Stadium.
McNairy won a close contest in the heptathlon with a score of 3,067 points. Hyde, meanwhile, was able to hold on in the 1,500 meters to collect the victory in the decathlon with a score of 5,630 points.
Pacific's Kasey Fisher (So., Denair, Calif.) performed well in her first collegiate multi-event, placing fourth with 2,774 points. Her top individual finishes was a third place in the 100-meter hurdles (16.53 seconds). Chloe Hallyburton (So., Dayton, Ore.) was 10th with score of 2,330 points.
In the decathlon, Aaron Koford (Fr., Wilsonville, Ore.) placed ninth with 5,052 points, leading two Boxers competing in their first decathlons. Koford was the individual winner in the discus with a throw of 120 feet, 9 inches and was in fifth place going into the 1,500 meters. Taylor Hickson (Fr., Red Bluff, Calif.) finished 10th with a score of 4,971 points. Hickson had a pair of third place finishes on day one in the long jump (20-2.5) and the high jump (5-10.5).
McNairy captured the heptathlon title in a competition that came right down to the final event. NcNairy led by 25 points over Western Oregon's Ali Mosher going into the 800 meters and 28 points over teammate Jennifer Roberts. While Roberts won the two-lapper, NcNairy finished a strong second in 2:33.83 to secure the title. McNairy won the 100-meter hurdles (15.96) to open the first day and the long jump (15-10.25). She also placed second in the 200 meters and third in the high jump.
Roberts won three of the individual disciplines and finished second with 3.694 points. In addition to the 800 meters, Roberts won the 200 meters (26.89 seconds) and the high jump (4-11.75). Mosher placed third with 3,672 points.
In the decathlon, Clackamas' Dominick Walker led most of the competition after gain first day wins in the 100 meters (11.44 seconds), the long jump (20-11.25) and the high jump (6-4.25) and the 110-meter hurdles (16.21 seconds) on day two. Needing to simply finish ahead of Hyde to win, Walker dropped out of the 1,500 meters with two laps to go, dropping to fifth place in the standings.
Hyde, meanwhile, finished no worse than fourth in any of the first day's events and won the third event, the shot put (39-4). He solidified his position on day two with a fourth place finish in the javelin (143-8) to put him within 30 points of Walker entering the 1,500. Carlos Vasquez of Clackamas CC was third with 5,297 points and was the individual winner of the javelin (167-6).
