McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Sam Lee (Sr., Fort Wayne, Ind.) made her first 10,000-meter run of her collegiate career a memorable run, setting a school record to lead Pacific's efforts at the Linfield Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker, held Friday and Saturday at Maxwell Field.
Running under the lights in Friday night's session, Lee finished third in the race with a time of 37:31.84. That well surpassed the previous school record of 38:03.69 set by Sarah Smith back in 2005. She was the top Northwest Conference performer in the race and will likely lead the NWC's top-times list next week.
Lee was not the only to post a record performance. The women's 400-meter relay team of Kelli Aken-Pagdilo (Fr., Makakilo, Hawaii), Jessica Head (Fr., North Bend, Ore.), Kori Bellwood (Fr., Yamhill, Ore.) and Nicole Smith (Sr., Wailuku, Hawaii) ran 51.79 seconds to finish fourth. The time bettered the previous mark of 52.01 seconds ran during the 2000 season.
While the Boxers had no individual winners in the non-team scored event, they saw 11 more Northwest Conference qualifying marks established in the second meet of the season. Annie Mutchler (Fr., Sisters, Ore.) tied for third in the triple jump, qualifying for the NWC meet with a mark of 34 feet, 4 inches. The performance is the second best in school history.
Jenna Matsumoto (Jr., Kailua, Hawaii) finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:09.28 and also placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.97 seconds. Smith earned qualifying marks in both the 200 meters and 400 meters, placing sixth in both events. Smith ran 27.50 seconds in the 200 and 1:02.19 in the 400.
Punneh Abdolhosseini (Fr., Seattle, Wash.) finished fourth in the 800 meters in a time of 2:29.84 while Chloe Hallyburton (So., Dayton, Ore.) finished sixth in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 9.75 inches.
John Fredericks (Sr., Forest Grove, Ore.) and Michael Hunker (So., Cornelius, Ore.) led the way on the men's side with a pair of third place finishes. Fredericks tied for third in the pole vault, clearing 12 feet, 6 inches. Hunker placed third in the 400-meter hurdles with a season-best 58.78 seconds. He also finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.15 seconds.
Jon Larson (So., So., Hermiston, Ore.) debuted in the steeplechase with a fourth place finish, qualifying for the NWC Championships with his time of 10:16.27. Avery Neal (Jr., Los Alamos, N.M.) qualified for the NWC meet in the 800 meters, finishing sixth in 1:58.82. Murphy Busek (Sr., Mountain View, Hawaii) notched a pair of sixth place finishes in both the shot put (41-8.75) and the hammer (140-9).
Pacific will now prepare for the first of three home meets on the 2011 schedule. The Boxers will host the Pacific Preview on Saturday and Sunday.
