VANCOUVER, Wash.—The Boxers traveled to Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash. to play a 'home' match against NWC rival Linfield. The men's tennis team pulled out a 5-4 win to improve to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in NWC play.
Due to weather for the second straight match, the Pacific men's tennis team has had to play their 'home' matches at neutral sites. Yet, they have battled to win both times.
Against Linfield (2-3, 2-3 NWC), Pacific won two of three doubles matches to gain some energy heading into singles play. Spencer Hing (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) and Troy Zuroske (Fr., Richland, Wash.) defeated Mark Magdaong and Brent Kingzett 8-6 at the No. 1 spot and Michael Okada (Sr., Hilo, Hawaii) and Scott Kawamura (So., Aiea, Hawaii) claimed a 8-6 victory over Cody Levien and Zachery Lyons at the No. 2 position.
At the No. 3 flight, Alen Suklje (Fr., Portland, Ore.) and Patrick Kinghorn (Sr., Salem, Ore.) battled Tal DeWitt and Tim Wagar before falling 9-7.
“Taking two of the three doubles matches truly gave us a lot of confidence going into singles,” said head coach Brain Jackson. “Our doubles continues to improve in each match, and is becoming a huge part of team's success. The energy was great.”
In singles play, the Boxers split with Linfield with three wins apiece.
Freshman Zuroske pushed his winning streak to six straight matches with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Levien at the No. 2 spot. Another freshman, Suklje added a win 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5 over Lyons and Pacific's final win came in a three set victory for Eric Furuya (Jr., Portland, Ore.) over Wagar 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
“Our depth proved to be valuable once again,” stated Jackson. “We are looking forward to continuing our improvement against a tough George Fox team.”
