BEAVERTON, Ore.—The Pacific men's tennis team traveled to Tualatin Hills Tennis Courts to take on and defeat the George Fox Bruins 5-4. Freshman Troy Zuroske (Richland, Wash.) moved up to No. 1 for the first time this season and is still undefeated in singles play.
“The match was probably the hardest fought match of the year for us,” stated head coach Brian Jackson. “George Fox has a great new team, and it took a big team effort to get the victory from them.”
The Boxers started the match taking two of three doubles matches. Michael Okada (Sr., Hilo, Hawaii) and Scott Kawamura (So., Aiea, Hawaii) defeated Peter Brown and Josiah Jackson 8-4 at No. 2. The second Boxer win was at No. 3 with Alen Suklje (Fr., Portland, Ore.) and Patrick Kinghorn (Sr., Salem, Ore.) collecting a win 8-2 over Justin McClain and Andy Tweet.
The Boxers came close to a doubles sweep, but Zurokse and Spencer Hing (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) fell to Scott Barnett and Preston Mann 8-6.
In singles play, Zuroske played his first match at No. 1 and defeated Barnett 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 6-3. He is now 7-0 this season. Playing at the No. 2 flight, Hing beat Brown 6-3, 6-2. The final singles victory for the Boxers was at the No. 6 spot with Eric Furuya (Jr., Portland, Ore.) claiming a win 6-4, 6-1 over Pax Magaway.
“This wraps up a series of three great wins for the Boxer tennis program,” Jackson said. “I am very proud of their effort and composure. The work that this team has put in is starting to pay off.”
Pacific will play a final home match at Holce Tennis Courts against Hardin-Simmons on Wed., March 16 before heading to southern California for a week of non-conference play.
