Tigers Use Superior Firepower To Outdistance Boxers

FOREST GROVE – Pacific found it difficult to stop the west's perennial women's lacrosse power Friday night as the Boxers fell to Colorado 16-6 at Lincoln Park Stadium.
The Boxers (7-4) were limited to just four goals in the first half and only two after the 23-minute mark of the opening stanza. The Tigers (7-1) proved aggressive the entire game offensively, outshooting the Boxers 36-22.
Monica Smith (Jr., Wilsonville, Ore.) led Pacific with two goals to go along with an assist. Four other Pacific players each scored one goal. Leslie Jacoby led Colorado College with a career high five goals. Grace Maloney added three goals while Frances Staadt and Lara Atkins each scored two.
After trading two-goal sets to open the contest, Colorado College bolted out to a 5-2 lead with three straight goals. Jacoby started the run with her goal at the 22:03 mark, while Elise Bruchard closed it out with her strike at 16:07 left.
Kelly Stevens (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) snapped the run with her unassisted strike with 12:56 left, but the Tigers closed the half on a 5-1 run.
Jacoby contributed two goals in the run, including the first at the 11:20 mark, and Grace Maloney added a pair before Frances Staadt closed it out with her unassisted goal with 1:40 left.
Carmen Taplin (So., Hillsboro, Ore.) gave the Boxers a goal to close the half, hitting off of a
Monica Smith (Jr., Wilsonville, Ore.) assist with 28 seconds left to make it a 10-4 game at halftime.
Scoring opportunities would be few and far between for the Boxers in the second half as the Tigers allowed just 11 shots in the final 30 minutes. Colorado College would reel off three goals over the first 10 minutes of the frame before Smith finally struck with 20:52 to go in the game. Kristen Dick (So., Auburn, Wash.) tallied with one minute to play. Lara Atkins accounted for the Tigers' final two goals, with the last coming with 4:25 left.
Colorado College held a 28-26 advantage in ground balls and an 18-7 edge in draw controls. The Tigers caused 15 turnovers, led by three by Kate Krieger. The Boxers finished with 10 caused turnovers.
Brittany Hartmann (So., Portland, Ore.) finished with 19 saves in the loss, one short of the Pacific single game record. Abby Fink made 10 saves in the win for the Tigers while playing 51 minutes.
Pacific will play its final three games of the season against their Northwest foes. The Boxers return to the home field on Monday night when they host Linfield. Colorado College concludes their Northwest trip on Sunday at Puget Sound.
