FOREST GROVE – A pair of high-flying performances in the pole vault topped a long list of highlights in a record-setting day at the fourth annual Pacific Twilight Track & Field Invitational, which concluded Saturday at Lincoln Park Stadium.
Clackamas CC's Keisa Monterola opened the day by resetting her own meet and meet record in the women's pole vault. Her vault of 14 feet, 1.75 inches ranks as the best mark at the junior college level this season and ties her for fifth best nationally at all collegiate levels as well at 11th by a U.S. athlete accord to Track & Field News' season best lists.
Eastern Oregon's Robbie Haynie closed the day with a record performance in the men's pole vault. His mark of 17 feet, 3 inches was not only the best by a NAIA athlete this season, but ties him for 19th best in all divisions.
The pole vault competition led a list of 14 meet records and 11 stadium records broken during the two-day meet. This year meet also set records for participation with 25 teams and 996 total athletes taking part.
Four of the combined meet and stadium records went down in the middle and long distance events. Portland's Cody Wells was a narrow winner in the men's 5,000 meters, crossing the line in 14:48.01. Northwest Christian swept victories and records in the 10,000 meters, with Megan Hall winning the women's race in 39:18.21 and Samuel Robison taking the men's race in 32:28.65. Kevin Hicks of the S.E.T.A. team set a record in the 800 meters with his winning time of 1:49.29.
In the sprints, Portland State's Karene King lowered both the meet and stadium records in the women's 200 meters with a time of 24.54 seconds. Catherine Sims lowered both in the women's 400 meters with her time of 56.20 seconds. Nike's Jordan Boase, an All-American while competing at Washington, claimed the men's 400-meter record with an impressive time of 46.28 seconds, ranking among the top 50 performances by a U.S. athlete this season.
Southern Oregon's men's 1,600-meter relay team laid claim to the meet and stadium record, easily winning the event in 3:16.60.
In the field events, Jere Summers captured the meet and facility record in the women's discus with a throw of 179 feet, 8 inches. The effort ranks among the top-20 by a U.S. athlete this season. Eric Whalen of Concordia (Ore.) established a meet record in the shot put with his mark of 54 feet.
In Friday's session, Concordia's Branko Djuricic earned the meet and stadium record in the triple jump with a mark of 47 feet, 11.75 inches. The College of Idaho's Kristine Smith captured the meet's 3,000-meter steeplechase record in 11:10.54 and Concordia's Gabrielle Dixson set a stadium record in the women's hammer with a throw of 175 feet, 10 inches.
Among the Pacific athletes competing in their last home meet of the season, Vince Mull (So., Beaverton, Ore.) led the way with a second place finish in the men's 100 meters, running a time of 11.12 seconds. The Boxers also finished second in the school's first known attempt at the 3,200-meter relay. The team of John Gillem (Jr., Prineville, Ore.), Steve Stoller (Sr., Canby, Ore.), John Cushman (Jr., Lakewood, Wash.) and Avery Neal (Jr., Los Alamos, N.M.) set a default school record with their time of 8:08.59.
The women's 400-meter relay, meanwhile, reset the school record in the event while finishing in third place. The team of Kelli Aken-Pagdilao (Fr., Makakilo, Hawaii), Kori Bellwood (Fr., Yamhill, Ore.), Jenna Matsumoto (Jr., Kailua, Hawaii) and Nicole Smith (Sr., Wailuku, Hawaii) ran a time of 50.33 seconds, bettering the mark of 51.16 seconds set the Pacific Preview meet in March.
Nathan Gilpin (Sr., Oregon City, Ore.) finished in fourth place in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a season best time of 57.07 seconds. Kasey Fisher (So., Denair, Calif.) returned from an illness that knocked her out of the Northwest Conference Championships to place sixth in the women's pole vault at 10 feet even. Aken-Pagdilao also placed sixth in the women's 100 meters with a time of 12.92 seconds, outdueling teammate Smith who finished eighth in 13.00 seconds.
In Friday's competition, Samantha Lee (Sr., Fort Wayne, Ind.) lowered her own record in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a second place time of 11:14.17.
With the Twilight meet in the books, the Boxers will now focus in on trying to improve marks for those trying to gain qualifiers for the NCAA Division III Championships. Pacific is scheduled to compete in the Oregon Twilight on Friday at Hayward Field in Eugene and will also send athletes to the Mt. Hood Twilight on Saturday in Gresham.
