Box Score
FOREST GROVE – Carlos Camacho and Jesse Torres scored two goals each to lead Trinity Lutheran to a dominating 9-2 victory over Pacific at Lincoln Park Stadium Sunday.
The Eagles led 5-1 at half and dominated play from the opening whistle, scoring their first goal just 88 seconds into the match when Reymundo Miranda got loose on a breakaway run. Starting goalkeeper
Michael Summers mistimed his charge and got caught out, allowing Miranda to slip a shot into the open net for a 1-0 lead.
The Boxers would have an early response. Six-foot-seven forward
Devin Shull (So., Seattle, Wash.) headed a cross to a wide open
Alex Arrington (Fr., Portland, Ore.), whose shot defelected off goalkeeper Luis Godinez right back to Shull, who hammered it in from close range on the rebound to even the match at 1-1 in the eighth minute.
The game wouldn't stay close for long. Less than three minutes later, the Eagles were on the board again when Camacho scored his first goal off an assist from Onofre Velasco. Less than 90 seconds after restarting play, Torres found the back of the net for his first goal and the rout was on.
Trinity Lutheran (6-2), a small Christian liberal arts college in Everett, Washington in only its second year of men's varsity soccer, outshot Pacific 18-6 in the first half with 12 shots on goal to Pacific's two. A change of goalkeepers at halftime had no effect on the offensive onslaught as Torres scored his second goal barely a minute after the teams returned to the field.
The Boxers played without starting defender
Jack Wickward, who sat out a mandated one game suspension after receiving two yellow cards in the previous match, a 3-0 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. All-conference midfielder
Patrick Murray missed his third consecutive game with a groin injury and starting defender
Taylor Kane was held out of the starting lineup with a sore back. Kane would eventually enter the game to try to bolster the leaky defense, but re-aggravated the injury after a hard collision in the first half.
The Boxers (0-4) tallied a late goal when freshman defender
Ian Ward (Chehalis, Wash.) rocketed a pass from
Joey Nagler (Fr., Eugene, Ore.) into the upper right corner from 12 yards out for his first collegiate goal.
The Eagles scored their nine goals against three Pacific goalkeepers. The loss was Pacific's worst since a 9-0 defeat at the hands of Walla Walla University in 2002 and only the second time since 1986 that Pacific has given up more than seven goals and lost by a margin of seven or more.
Hoping to enter Northwest Conferene play on a winning note after beating Trinity Lutheran 3-1 in 2010, the Boxers will now pursue their first win of the season when they host Whitworth on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 2:30 p.m. Earlier in the day, Whitworth (2-1-1) gave up the game-winning goal with 12 seconds left in regulation in a 2-1 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The game was played at Pacific's Lincoln Park Stadium prior to the Boxers match against Trinity Lutheran.
