PORTLAND – Concordia (Ore.) grabbed a 3-0 haltime lead and held on to defeat Pacific 3-1 Sunday, handing the Boxers their first loss of the season.
The Cavaliers' Alex Thomas rebounded her own shot to score the first goal of the match in the 15th minute. Just three minutes later, Kaylynn Winwood scored off an assist by freshman forward Erin Huisingh.
With ten minutes to go before halftime, sophomore forward Alex Blalock received a cross from sophomore midfielder Hayley Hayes and drilled a low shot inside the left post, completing a dominant first half in which the Cavaliers outshot Pacific 14-5 with an 8-2 edge in shots on goal.
“The first half we gave them way too much respect,” said assistant coach Dane Christian of the Cavaliers (3-3), whose only loss in 2010 came in the second round of the NAIA Tournament, their tenth straight trip to nationals. “We told the girls to be smart and told them to be patient, but we gave them everything and they punished us for it.”
The Boxers scored their only goal on a
Teri Shigeno (Sr., Meridian, Idaho) penalty kick in the 55th minute. After
Bryanna DeLima's (Sr., Hilo, Hawaii) shot was saved by Concordia goalkeeper Tory Talbutt, the Cavaliers committed a handball in the penalty box trying to clear the ball after the deflection. Shigeno sent a low shot into the bottom right corner for her first goal of the season.
“We did really well in the second half,” said Christian. “We got two one-on-one opportunities and didn't convert, but it gave them confidence. The rest of the half was even after the penalty kick.”
Pacific goalkeeper
Brittany Hartmann (Jr., Portland, Ore.) made ten saves, but saw her two game shutout streak come to an end.
Jordan Bodily led Pacific with two shots on goal. The Boxers got strong play from
Kristen Dick (Jr., Auburn, Wash.) for the second straight game.
“She was on the verge of being cut after last year,” said Christian of the junior midfielder. “So far she has been tremendous. She played around a half and was a great contributor.”
Christian also praised the play of Shigeno and
Kelsey Lockwood (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah).
The Boxers open Northwest Conference play at home against George Fox on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 7:00 p.m.
