Boxers come back to defeat Lewis & Clark 2-1 in overtime on Jordan Bodily's golden goal

Box Score

PORTLAND –Depending on how you view it, the Pacific women's soccer team is either fond of overtime, or they dislike it so much they just can't end it fast enough.

Either way, it has worked out pretty well in the win column for the Boxers.

Tianna Homad (Sr., Seattle, Wash.) had a goal and an assist and Jordan Bodily (Sr., Eagle, Idaho) scored two goals including the game-winner in the fourth minute of overtime as Pacific defeated Lewis & Clark 3-2 Sunday at Griswold Stadium.

With the victory, the Boxers (2-1-1 Northwest Conference, 5-2-1 overall) improved to 2-0-1 in overtime games on the season. In the two victories, the Boxers have played barely over four minutes of extra soccer, the equivalent of two television time outs.

Kailee Green (Fr., Hillsboro, Ore.), the hero of Pacific's 1-0 overtime win over George Fox the previous week--a game cinched after a mere 56 seconds of extra play--set the wheels in motion for the victory celebration with a pair of shots on goal, the second of which forced Lewis & Clark goalkeeper Elise Delgado to deflect the ball over the end line. On the resulting corner kick, Homad served it short to Bodily on the near side of the 18-yard box and the senior forward fired a bender inside the back post for the winning goal.

A midgame lapse saw the Boxers fall behind 2-1 by halftime after scoring early. Pacific pressed hard for most of the second half before breaking through with the equalizing goal on a Homad header in the 81st minute following a flurry of activity in front of the Pioneers' goal. Sarah Tuffey (Jr., Valencia, Calif.) sent a shot wide, then Bryanna DeLima (Sr., Hilo, Hawaii) followed with a strike deflected in the air by Delgado to Homad, who sent in a screamer to level the match.

“We were very proud of them,” said assistant coach Dane Christian, “but we have to make sure that we start games off in the same fashion, but that we keep the foot on the pedal.”

Bodily put Pacific on the board in the 24th minute, when her low shot skipped off the slick turf past Delgado. The lead wouldn't last long. Less than a minute later, Sarah Breninger tied the score by rebounding her own shot off Boxers' goalkeeper Brittany Hartmann (Jr., Portland, Ore.). A mere five minutes later the Pioneers had the lead, as Gina Watkins headed in an Emilia Emmetti corner kick in the 31st minute to make it 2-1 Pioneers.

Lineup changes at halftime seemed to light a fire under the Boxers, who played with much more urgency after former Central Kitsap high school teammates Chandler Bowen (Fr., Silverdale, Wash.)and Taylor Gillespie (Fr., Silverdale, Wash.) took to the pitch, along with Abby Cain (So., Salem, Ore.). All three saw extended game action for the first time this season.

“They were nothing short of fantastic,” said Christian. “They were absolutely brilliant and they helped set the stage for what was to come. We couldn't be more thankful or proud of them.

“The three of them set the tone for the entire rest of the game. They did their jobs plus a little more.”

The turnaround was severe. After being outshot 8-4 over the first 45 minutes, the Boxers had a 10-1 shots advantage the rest of the way with four shots on goal, while Hartmann was untroubled after halftime after giving up two goals and making five saves in the first half. Bodily, who leads the Boxers with four goals, led all players with four shots and three shots on goal.

Pacific returns to action Saturday, October 1 with a noon kickoff at Willamette.
