FIRST HALF OF NWC SEASON ENDS WITH PALOUSE TRIP
The Pacific volleyball team capped a 2-1 week with a Wednesday victory over Linfield and a five-set victory over No. 17 ranked Colorado College.  The Boxers will finish up the first half of the Northwest Conference season with the annual eastern Washington road trip.  Pacific will play at Whitworth on Friday and Whitman on Saturday.

BOXER BYTES
• Pacific could not keep up with a strong hitting night by No. 18 Pacific Lutheran on Friday night with the Lutes taking the three-set match, 25-19, 25-18, 25-14.  The Lutes hit .286 for the match as compared to the Boxers' .130.

• On Saturday, Pacific stunned No. 17 ranked Colorado College by taking the first two sets and then held on for the five-set victory, 25-15, 27-25, 23-25, 18-25, 15-11.  The Boxers hit .203 for the match, including hitting .367 in the first set and .345 in the final set.

Marie Rewick had another big week offensively for the Boxers, finishing with 51 kills, 3.92 kills per set, 29 digs and three blocks.  She led Pacific in kills in last week's two victories and came up one short of the school single match record with her 27 kills in the five-set victory over Colorado College.

Alexa Block also had a big week offensively with her 42 kills, 3.23 kills per set, nine digs and three blocks.  She led the Boxers with eight kills in the Friday loss to Pacific and finished with 23 kills and an impressive .340 hitting percentage in the victory over Colorado College.

Mariah McHolland also made tremendous contributions on the offense with her 34 kills, .280 hitting percentage and 15 blocks in last week's three matches.  McHolland finished with 12 kills and seven blocks in the Saturday win over Colorado College.

Megan Zablan has performed well after stepping in at setter in place of the injured Emily Farnham.  Zablan finished with 139 assists and 10.6 assists per set in the three matches, led by a 60-assist effort in the win over Colorado College.

• Pacific's 4-1 start to Northwest Conference play was the best in the modern history over the program (since 1986).  The team's current 4-2 record equals the start that the Boxers' had during the 2011 season.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

PACIFIC NEWS & NOTES
FLIRTING WITH RECORD TERRITORY:
It was another impressive week of offense for Marie Rewick (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) and one where she flirted with the Pacific record book.  Rewick finished the three matches last week with 51 kills, 3.92 kills per set, 29 digs and a .236 hitting percentage.  She came up just one kill short of the Pacific single match record for kills on Saturday, spiking home 27 kills in the Boxers' five set victory over No. 17 Colorado College (current record is 28 set by Jill Peacock in 2007).  She also added 20 digs for her fourth double-double of the season and had a .349 hitting percentage.  Rewick is posting the type of numbers that could make her a candidate to be Pacific's first freshman First Team All-Northwest Conference selection since Kelsy Takashima in 2008.  She leads the Boxers and ranks sixth in the NWC with an average of 3.15 kills per set (170 kills total).

BLOCK POUNDING AWAY: Alexa Block (Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) is swinging away at full strength for the Boxers, helping lift the team to their two wins last week.  Block finished the week with 42 kills, a 3.23 kills per set, nine digs and a .186 hitting percentage.  She led the Boxers with eight kills in the loss to No. 18 Pacific Lutheran on Friday before adding 23 kills and a .340 hitting percentage in the victory over No. 17 Colorado College on Saturday.  Block, a Honorable Mention All-NWC selection at outside hitter in 2011, enters the week ranked ninth in the NWC with her average of 2.91 kills per set (154 total).

A SEAMLESS TRANSITION: A transition to a new setter can be problematic, but Megan Zablan (Fr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) has made that transition seem easy.  Zablan started all three matches last week in place of the injured Emily Farnham (Fr., University Place, Wash.) and quickly proved that the Boxers have two capable and talented setters.  Zablan finished wthe week with an average of 10.6 assists per set (139 total), led by a 60-assist performance in the five-set win over Colorado College.  Zablan enters the week ranked eighth in the NWC with her average of 7.30 assists per set.  Farnham, meanwhile, remains ranked sixth in the league with her average of 8.46 assists per set.

NET PROFIT: Not to be outdone by her outside hitter counterparts, Mariah McHolland (Jr., Renton, Wash.) did her part to help the Boxers win their two matches last week.  McHolland finished the week with 34 kills, a .280 hitting percentage and 15 blocks.  In the five-set victory over Colorado College, McHolland came alive for 12 kills and seven blocks.  In her third year as a starting middle blocker for the Boxers, McHolland enters the week ranked seventh in the NWC with a .242 hitting percentage and with 0.89 assists per set.

UNPRECEDENTED START: After opening the season losing their first seven matches, the Boxers have opened the 2012 Northwest Conference season with one of the best league starts in program history.  The team's 4-1 start to the conference schedule had not happened in the modern history of the program, dating back to the 1986 campaign.  The Boxers' current 4-2 conference record matches the 4-2 start the Boxers made during the 2011 season.

PROGRESS TOWARDS RANKS: Pacific's five-set win over No. 17 Colorado College marked the Boxers' first victory over an opponent ranked in the AVCA Division III Coaches Top-25 Poll this season.  Pacific is 1-4 this season against ranked teams, but three of those matches have gone more than the minimum three sets.  Pacific opened with a four-set loss to No. 23 Occidental on Sept. 1, a five-set loss to No. 6 Cal Lutheran on Sept. 8 and a three-set loss to No. 10 Puget Sound on Sept. 22.  No. 18 Pacific Lutheran took a three-set win from Pacific on Sept. 28.

GIMME FIVE: Five seems to be the magic number for the Boxers when it comes to winning.  Pacific enters the weekend with a 4-1 record in five-set matches, the latest coming on Saturday in the five-set win over Colorado College.  Three of Pacific's Northwest Conference four wins have come in five-set matches.

PACIFIC PICKED SEVENTH IN NWC PRESEASON POLL: Northwest Conference coaches have picked Pacific seventh in the NWC this season in the preseason poll released in August.  The Boxers received 24 of a possible 80 points on the poll to finish three points ahead of Willamette and six points behind George Fox.  Pacific Lutheran is selected to ovetake 2011 NWC champion Whitworth for the conference crown, receiving five first place votes and a total of 65 points.  The Pirates earned two first place votes and 54 points while Puget Sound is picked third with 50 points and one first place vote.  Lewis & Clark was picked fourth with 44 points while Linfield is fifth with 35 points.
