Missionaries Score Two In First Half To Shutout Boxers

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Pacific men's soccer team shot 12 times in the match, but could not find the back of the net as the Boxers fell 2-0 to Whitman in Northwest Conference action on Sunday afternoon at the Whitman soccer field.
Whitman (6-8-3, 4-5-2 NWC) opened the scoring in the first half in the 17
th minute when Leland Matthaeus crossed to Junpei Tsuji who scissor kicked the ball to the back of net to take a 1-0 lead for the Missionaries.
The Boxers attempted to tie the match up in the 20
th minute when
Alex Arrington (So., Portland, Ore.) fired to the posts, but hit the post.
The Missionaries would score the final goal of the match in the 28
th minute. After a foul on Pacific, Joe Virden fired to the back of the net, which hit off a defender and into the goal.
Nick Rudella (Jr., Sammamish, Wash.) tried to get the Boxers on the board in the 30
th minute, but was shut down by Whitman goalkeeper Michael Bathurst.
The Boxers shot eight times in the second half, but could not come up with a goal. After a foul on Whitman in the 45
th minute,
Luis Quintana (Jr., Quilcene, Wash.) fired to the posts, but was once again saved by Bathurst.
Quintana led the Boxers with three shots.
Jorge Mandujano (So., Corneilus, Ore.), Rudella, and Mark Watson (So., Oregon City, Ore.) each collected two shots.
Michael Summers (Jr., Beaverton, Ore.) (4-12) recorded the loss between the pipes, tallying two saves. Bathurst collected the victory in the net for the Missionaries with four saves.
The Boxers (4-12, 2-9 NWC) are three games away from wrapping up Northwest Conference play. They return home to Lincoln Park Stadium next weekend on Oct. 27 and 28 to host Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound. Both of the matches will begin at 2:30 p.m.
