Boxers Claw Wildcats Thanks To Rewick's 20-20 Night
Box Score
FOREST GROVE –
Marie Rewick (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) put together a 20-kill, 20-dig night Wednesday night to lead Pacific to a four-set victory over Linfield, 17-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-20, in Northwest Conference volleyball action at Ted Wilson Gymnasium.
Rewick's ninth double-double of the season allowed the Boxers (10-11, 9-4 NWC) to secure their first sweep of the Wildcats (8-13, 3-10 NWC) since the 1996 season. It also marked just the third match this season that Pacific has won in less than five sets.
Alexa Block (Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) added 15 kills in the victory.
Mariah McHolland (Jr., Renton, Wash.) added eight and six blocks to break the Boxers' single season record (25/30-point era) for blocks. Her 87 so far in 2012 eclipsed the mark of 85 set by Joanna Delanty in 2007.
Becky Sheller (Fr., Gresham, Ore.) finished with 25 digs and
Megan Zablan (Fr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) had 35 assists.
Leimomi Hookano came off the bench to lead the Wildcats with 14 kills. Shayli Coppock and Victoria Thompson each had eight kills. Audrey Frazier had a double-double of 36 assists and 13 digs while Kailana Ritte-Camara had 21 digs. Linfield hit just .068 for the match while the Boxers finished with a .124 hitting percentage.
In the first set, it looked as if the match would be headed for another five-set affair that the Boxers have become accustomed to and that have typified the Pacific/Linfield series. The Wildcats broke open a 6-6 with four straight points, going ahead 10-6 on Coppock's kill. The lead was 13-10 when Linfield rolled out another five-point run, bolstered by a pair of Ritte-Camara aces, to build the 18-10 edge en route to the eventual 25-17 victory.
After the first set, the Boxers controlled the tempo over the final three. Pacific opened up the 5-1 early in the second set on a block by Zablan and McHolland. The four-point lead held for much of the set and Block closed it out with the kill as the Boxers took the 25-20 win.
The Boxers broke open the third set with a run of five straight points behind
Jade Thompson's (Sr., Marysville, Wash.) serve to take an 8-3 lead. The Wildcats came back to take a 13-12 lead on a pair of Pacific attack errors and things stayed close until late. Linfield led 20-19 when the Boxers closed out the frame with six straight points. Rewick had the final three kills as the Boxers took the 25-20 victory.
Pacific never trailed in the fourth set, opening up a 10-8 7 lead on a Linfield attack error. Another string of attack errors off serves by Thompson to build the 17-12 edge. The Wildcats closed to within 23-20 late on a Pacific attack error, but McHolland's kill and block assist with Block ended the evening.
The Boxers close the road portion of their road schedule on Friday, traveling north to Tacoma to face No. 16 ranked Pacific Lutheran. Match time is 7 p.m.
