Boxers Use Overtime To Secure Victory Over Deacons

FOREST GROVE – Paige Jensen's (Sr., Bemidji, Minn.) double-double and an overtime period, helped the Pacific women's basketball squad to secure a tight 76-75 victory over New Hope Christian on Wednesday evening at the Stoller Center.
 
The Boxers took control from the start of the game, taking an 18-point lead into the first five minutes. Alex Pfefferle (Jr., Twin Falls, Idaho) started the game from beyond the arc to make it 3-0. From then on the Boxer controlled the next five minutes with Pfefferle scoring the next four points.
 
The Deacons came alive on the score board at the 14:47 mark when Dorian Perkey was fouled by Nani Ostrom (So., Juneau, Alaska). She would make two from the charity stripe. The Deacons would cut the Boxer lead to 15 at half after a jumper by Chelsea Dyson.
 
The Deacons would start strong the second half, holding the Boxers to zero points until the 16:56 mark in the second half, when Kaila Johnson (So., McKinleyville, Calif.) shot from beyond the arc to make the score 37-29. At the 6:18 mark, the Deacons began to get back into the game, but the Boxers would hold their ground with a lay-up by Jensen. The Deacons tied the game at 62-62 with 11 seconds to go in regulation.
 
Heading into overtime, the Boxers took the lead after Pfefferle passed to Heather Hitch (Sr., Enumclaw, Waash.) where she scored from about four feet out. Perkey closed the gap to one off a jumper at the 1:28 mark, but Johnson came down beyond the arc to regain a four-point lead.
 
The Deacons ended up having to foul to gain possession of the ball, but the Boxers used their free throws to secure the victory. After a foul by Dyson, Pfefferle went to the charity stripe. She missed the first, but made the second to make the score 76-72. Dyson would come down in the last few second to make a long three-pointer, but was not enough as the Boxers took home the victory.
 
Four Pacific players ended the game with 12 points. Jensen ended the game with 12 points and 10 rebounds, in 28 minutes of play, her first double-double of the season. She also tallied four steals. Hitch scored 12 points to go along with four rebounds. Pfefferle added to the offense with 12 points and four assists. Johnson also added four points, while Erica Colter (Sr., Kennewick, Wash.) added six assists. The Boxers shot 41 percent from the field and was 35 percent from beyond the arc. The Boxers also shot 69 percent from the free throw line.
 
The Boxers (3-0) open Northwest Conference play on Saturday with Willamette. The game will start at 6 p.m.
