Ruggerio's Pin Leads Boxers In Victory Over Lakers
COOS BAY, Ore. –
Daylin Ruggiero's (Fr., Ely, Nev.) first dual meet victory in a Pacific uniform paced the Boxers to their second dual meet victory of the season Thursday as they edged past Southwestern Oregon CC, 24-22, in men's wrestling action at the Student Recreation Center.
Ruggiero was in full control in gaining his first pin as a Boxer, scoring a takedown and a near fall before ending the match with 15 seconds left in the first period. The victory improved Ruggiero's record to 3-4 on the season.
The remainder of Pacific's victories came by forfeits as the Boxers struggled to stay on the inning side of a number of close matches.
Chris Harlin (Jr., Issaquah, Wash.) collected an injury default at 174 pounds while
Caleb Malychewski (Jr., Camas, Wash.) and
Nik Streng (Sr., Honolulu, Hawaii) collected forfeits at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively. The forfeit win for Malychewski extended his win streak to 13 matches and improved his record to 13-1 on the season.
After the opening pin, the Lakers swung the tide by taking a pair of close matches. Kyle Johnston and
Eric Harder (So,, Bethesda, Md.) saw all of the scoring in their match at 133 pounds come in the first period, which included six reversals. A pair of near falls for Johnston made the difference in his 11-8 victory. Quin Johnston then made a first round takedown stand up in a low-scoring 3-1 victory over
Ryan Baxter (So., Craig, Alaska) at 141 pounds to tie the match at 6-6.
Ryan Bullock gave the Lakers the lead in the 149-pound match, scoring a 2 minute, 50 second pin over
Allin Franco (Fr., Kailua, Hawaii). Payton Moore then added an 8-4 decision over
Bruce Balcita (Jr., Myrtle Creek, Ore.) at 165 pounds, with a first round takedown and near fall making the difference as the Lakers surged to an 18-6 lead.
Harlin recovered from a takedown to score a reversal over Tyler Strenke in the 174-pound bout, but the Lakers' wrestlers had to withdraw due to an injury. That began the string of three forfeits and defaults that gave the match to the Boxers.
Pacific will now prepare for their first NCAA Division III competition of the season, traveling to Las Vegas for the Wartburg Desert Duals on Sunday at the Flamingo Hotel. The Boxers will face Washington & Lee, No. 10 Olivet, No. 28 Loras and No. 9 (NAIA) Baker (Kan.).
