FOREST GROVE – After collecting two of three doubles matches, Pacific leaned on their top three singles flights to score a close 5-4 victory over Puget Sound Saturday in women's tennis action at the Holce Tennis Courts.

After opening the day with victories from the No. 2 pair of Lillian Do (Fr., Beaverton, Ore.) and Kelsey Trujillo (So., Honolulu, Hawaii) and the No. 3 tandem of Amber Craviotto (Fr., Eugene, Ore.) and Rachel Mizuno (Jr., So., Mililani, Hawaii), Pacific needed at least three singles matches to take their first win from the Loggers under Head Coach Sarah Ansboury.

Those top players delivered.  Cathlene Goya (Sr., Kaneohe, Hawaii) opened up with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kira Kearsley in the No. 1 flight, while Megan Yoshimoto (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii) scored a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Maddie Thiesse at No. 2.  Mizuno, playing in the No. 3 position, had a much tougher match against Jenna Gerdsen.  Finding herself down 5-3 in the first set, Mizuno came back to take the first set and win the match 7-6, 6-4.

“Rachel has been our standout in the first three matches,” Ansboury said.  “She also rallied back in the doubles and has turned in some good matches.”

Mizuno and Craviotto also rallied back from behind 5-3 in their doubles match against Thiesse and Ada Yu.  The pair pulled ahead for what would prove to be a key 9-7 victory in the No. 3 flight.  Do and Trujillo also pulled through in a close No. 2 match with Logan Thompson and Marissa Friedman, winning 8-6.

Kearsley and Allison Embernate gave the Loggers their first win, edging past Goya and Yoshimoto in the No. 1 doubles flight 9-7.  Thompson scored a 6-4, 6-5 win over Trujillo at No. 4, Friedman scored a 6-2, 6-4 win over Do at No. 5 and Josephine Dow was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Craviotto at No. 6.

Pacific will split home and away matches next weekend.  The Boxers travel to Lewis & Clark for a Friday match at 4 p.m., before returning home to host Willamette on Saturday at noon.  Puget Sound is home on Sunday for a showdown with Division I Seattle.
