Pacific moves to 2-0 in conference after 9-0 win over Lewis & Clark

Box Score

FOREST GROVE – The Pacific men's tennis team made short work of Lewis & Clark on Friday, taking all but one set in a 9-0 Northwest Conference victory at Hulce Tennis Courts.

Pacific improved to 2-0 in conference and 2-1 overall with the victory. Through two NWC matches, Pacific has now won all but one set.

In No. 1 singles, Troy Zuroske (So., Richland, Wash.) had a fight on his hands against the Pioneers' Oliver Groot, dropping the second set 5-7 after winning the first set 6-3. With the team match already clinched by the Boxers, Zuroske and Groot played a first-to-10 tiebreaker round instead of a third set, with Zuroske prevailing 10-3.

Zuroske and Giancarlo Battaglia (Fr., Sherman Oaks, Calif.) also won their No. 1 doubles match, topping Groot and Quinn Roth-Carter 8-5.

Outside of the two No. 1 matchups, Pacific commanded the rest of the match, despite their No.'s 2 and 3 singles players, Spencer Hing (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz.) and Battaglia, being limited to doubles duty.

Hing and Scott Kawamura (Jr., Aiea, Hawaii) defeated Carter Gee-Taylor and Scott Monismith 8-2 in No. 2 doubles. Brandon Schlack (Fr., Long Beach) stepped into Hing's No. 2 singles slot and handed Roth-Carter a 6-2, 6-1 defeat. In No. 3 singles, Eric Furuya (Sr., Portland, Ore.) sent Gee-Taylor packing after a tough first set, winning 7-5, 6-0 in No. 3 singles.

The Boxers were so efficient in victory, that No. 5 and 6 singles matches were shortened to single 8-point sets, with Kolin Wong (Jr., Captain Cook, Hawaii) topping Cole Pfeiffer 8-1 at No. 5 and Hector Alcayde (Wahiawa, Hawaii) getting past Lucas Fodor 8-2 in the No. 6 match. Wong and Alcayde also combined for a No. 3 doubles victory over Fodor and Christian Stanbrook, 8-3.

Kawamura played at No. 4 singles and leveled Monismith 6-0, 6-1 in the most dominating performance of the day.

The Boxers head to Salem to face Willamette on Saturday. The match time and location has changed due to weather conditions and will be held in the indoor Courthouse Tennis Center. The start time has changed as well, pushed back an hour and a half to 3:30 p.m. It will be Willamette's regular season-opener after the Bearcats defeated the University of Oregon club team 7-2 in a warmup match on Feb. 18.
