PORTLAND – The absence of their No. 5 singles player did little to slow a terrific start for the Pacific women's tennis team Friday as the Boxers rolled to a 6-3 victory over Lewis & Clark in a Northwest Conference match at the L&C Tennis Dome.

Pacific played without Kelsey Trujillo (So., Honolulu, Hawaii) in the singles due to illness, forcing Head Coach Sarah Ansboury to juggle the lineup a bit.  The change did little to phase the Boxers, who improved to 3-1 and 2-1 against NWC opponents.  “We had to change things with Kelsey being sick, but all of the ladies stepped up,” Ansboury said.

The Boxers opened the day with a clean sweep in doubles, setting themselves up for an easy run through the singles flights.  Cathlene Goya (Sr., Kaneohe, Hawaii) and Megan Yoshimoto (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii) opened the day with a n 8-4 victory over Gillian Lowe and Jill Coleman in the No. 1 match as the tandem improved to 2-2 on the season.

Trujillo paired with Lillian Do (Fr., Beaverton, Ore.) to take the No. 2 match over Lisa Osepyan and Olivia Sweetman, 8-6, while Rachel Mizuno (Jr., Mililani, Hawaii) and Amber Craviotto (Fr., Eugene, Ore.) notched an 8-4 win over Makena McCluskey and Justine Minette at No. 3.

Goya improved to 3-1 on the season in the No. 1 singles flight, scoring a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Lowe.  Yoshimoto also improved to 3-1 with her 6-4, 6-3 decision over Osepyan at No. 2.  Mizuno, meanwhile, suffered her second loss of the season with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat at the hands of Coleman at No. 3.

Do survived a tie-break in the second set to knock off Sweetman at No. 4, 6-0, 7-6 (10-8).  The Pioneers claimed the final two matches, with McCluskey beating Craviotto at No. 5, 6-3, 6-0, and Elisa Always taking care of Kelsey Lack (So., Grants Pass, Ore.) at No. 6, 3-6, 6-3, 10-4.

Pacific will complete the weekend on the home courts on Saturday as they play host to Willamette.  The match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
