Malychewski Earns Lone Win Against Ranked Clackamas
OREGON CITY, Ore. –
Caleb Malychewski (Jr., Camas, Wash.) wrestled up a weight to prevent a shutout Thursday against national junior college power Clackamas CC as the Cougars rolled to a 44-5 men's wrestling dual meet victory at Randall Hall.
Wrestling his first match of the season at 174 pounds, Malychewski scored his team-leading 19th victory of the season with a 17-0 technical fall over Josh Nelson. It was the fourth technical fall of the season and the fifth dual meet win of the year for Malychewski.
The win broke up what appeared to be a potential scoreless rout for Clackamas, who entered the match ranked No. 3 in the National Junior College Athletics Association rankings. The Cougars finished the night with four pins, three of which came in the first six matches, and scored bonus points in all but two of the evening's bouts.
After Sage Ornelas opened the night with a major decision victory over
Ian Hockett (Fr., Sherwood, Ore.) at 125 pounds, the Cougars reeled off three straight six-point matches. Martin Gonzalez accepted a forfeit win at 133 pounds while Cody Randall and Clinton McAlester notched pins at 141 pounds and 149 pounds, respectively.
Michael Tyner (Fr., Aloha, Ore.) came close to ending the skid, taking a close 6-3 decision to Nikko Veltri at 157 pounds.
Eric Hensel earned Clackamas' third pin of the night at 165 pounds before Malychewski closed out the Cougars' 31-0 run with his technical fall at 174 pounds. Trent Noon scored the fourth pin of the night at 184 pounds before Austin Morehead scored a 17-5 major decision over Wes Heredia (Fr., Keizer, Ore.) at 197 pounds. Will Ulrich (Fr., Lake Elsinore, Calif.) came close to the win in his first dual meet of the season, dropping a 5-3 decision to Jake Laden.
With the loss, Pacific dropped to 3-8 in dual meets while Clackamas improved to 12-2 on the season. Pacific wraps up the 2011-12 dual meet portion on the schedule on Friday night when they host No. 2 (NAIA) ranked Southern Oregon.
