Boxers Cruise Past Lutes In 5 Hour Tennis Marathon

TACOMA, Wash. – It took five hours from start to finish, but it didn't take that long for Pacific to snap a two-match losing streak Friday night as the Boxers took a 7-2 victory from Pacific Lutheran in Northwest Conference women's tennis action at the Sprinker Tennis Center.
The Boxers (5-3, 4-3 NWC) set the momentum in motion by taking two of three doubles matches.
Cathlene Goya (Sr., Kaneohe, Hawaii) and
Megan Yoshimoto Sr., Mililani, Hawaii) saw their No. 1 match with Leah Newell and Tina Aarsvold go down to a tiebreaker. The Boxers succeeded in keeping the break in the decider and took a 9-8 (7-2) victory.
Kelsey Trujillo (So., Honolulu, Hawaii) and
Lillian Do (Fr., Beaverton, Ore.) had an easier in their No. 2 match, taking an 8-3 win from Cora Wigen and Valery Jorgensen.
Rachel Mizuno (Jr., Mililani, Hawaii) and
Amber Craviotto (Fr., Eugene, Ore.) came close to a tiebreaker at No. 3 with Allison McClure and Katherine Patton, but the Lutes (0-7, 0-6 NWC) held for the home win of the day at 9-7.
Pacific secured the match by taking the top five singles flights, including a pair of three-set affairs. Yoshimoto fell in the first set to Wigen at No. 2, but came back to easily take the next two frames for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory. Mizuno also found herself down after one set to Aarsvold at No. 3, but rallied for the 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win.
Goya scored an easy 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Newell, Trujillo was a 6-4, 6-0 victor at No. 4 over McClure and Do registered a 6-2, 6-3 win over Patton at No. 5. Catherine Miolla scored the Lutes' only singles victory, taking a 7-5,6-2 No. 6 match from
Kelsey Lack (So., Grants Pass, Ore.).
Friday's match was the only competition of the week for the Boxers. They returns to the courts on Fri., Mar. 16, when they host Linfield.
