Pacific bounces back from Whitman defeat to improve to 5-1 in NWC.

Box Score

FOREST GROVE – The Pacific men's tennis team got back on the winning track Sunday, knocking off visiting Pacific Lutheran 7-2 one day after losing to Northwest Conference-leading Whitman by the same score.

Pacific improved to 5-1 in NWC play and 6-2 overall with the victory. Pacific Lutheran fell to 2-4 and 3-4 with the loss.

Scott Kawamura (Jr., Aiea, Hawaii) and Brandon Schlack (Fr., Long Beach, Calif.) each got into the win column twice, picking up wins in singles and doubles. Kawamura combined with Spencer Hing (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz.) to defeat Dan Cotton and Luke Olson 8-4 in the No. 2 doubles match before dispatching Olson in a quick 6-1, 6-1 sweep in No. 6 singles. Schlack continues to mow through NWC competition in the No. 4 singles slot, taking Spencer Herron 6-2, 6-4. The powerful freshman has yet to drop a set against an NWC opponent, going to 6-0 on the season. Schlack also paired with Kolin Wong (Captain Cook, Hawaii) for an 8-5 No. 3 doubles victory over Herron and Neal Berg.

After an exhilarating victory over Whitman's No. 1 doubles team on Saturday, Pacific's top pair could not sustain the momentum into Sunday. Pacific Lutheran's Zach AhYat and Taylor Dickey got past Troy Zuroske (So., Richland, Wash.)  and Giancarlo Battaglia (Fr., Sherman Oaks, Calif.) 8-5. The two youngsters would recover to win their singles matches, as Zuroske knocked off AhYat 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 1 match and Battaglia outlasted Dickey, winning 6-7, 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 3 showdown.

Eric Furuya (Sr., Portland, Ore.) gave the Boxers five singles wins out of six, taking down Reed Gunstone 2-6, 6-1, 10-7. Hing dropped his second consecutive No. 2 singles match, losing to Cotton 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

“It was a good win today for us,” said head coach Brian Jackson. “We bounced back against a very tough young team who has been on a roll lately. They gave us all we could handle, but our experience showed through.”

The Boxers play their next two matches on the road, heading to Linfield on Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. contest, a change from the original schedule. Another tough test looms ahead as the Boxers take on George Fox in Newberg on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
