Box Score
MCMINNVILLE, Ore. – It was nearly a clean sweep for the Pacific men's tennis team.
For the third time this year, the Boxers blanked a Northwest Conference opponent by winning all three doubles matches and all six singles matches in a 9-0 victory at Linfield Thursday. The Boxers were one set away from sweeping every set in a match for the second time this season as they ran their NWC record to 6-1 and their overall record to 6-2. The Wildcats dropped to 2-5, 2-6 overall with the loss at the Linfield Tennis Center.
Only
Eric Furuya (Sr., Portland, Ore.) went past set two in the No. 4 singles match, defeating Luke Kleinman 6-2, 2-6, 10-8. Furuya moved up from No. 5 as Boxer freshman
Brandon Schlack (Fr., Long Beach, Ore.) vaulted into the No. 2 singles slot on Thursday. Undaunted, Schlack ran his streak of consecutive winning sets in NWC competition to 14 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Zach Lyons.
With
Spencer Hing (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz.) sitting out the match, the sophomore Schlack filled the senior's vacated slot, opening an opportunity for
Kolin Wong (Jr., Captain Cook, Hawaii) to compete at No. 6 singles. Wong had one of the swiftest wins of the day, knocking off Ian Rapport 6-2, 6-1, while
Scott Kawamura (Jr., Aiea, Hawaii) dispatched Ben Brewer by the same score in the No. 5 singles match.
In doubles, No. 1 team
Troy Zuroske (So., Richland, Wash.) and
Giancarlo Battaglia (Fr., Sherman Oaks, Calif.) opened play with an 8-5 win over Lyons and Cody Levien. Both Zuroske and Battaglia triumphed in straight sets in their singles matches as Zuroske defeated Levien 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 match and Battaglia stopped Micah Roos with a 6-4, 6-0 win in the No. 3 slot, one of three singles matches that ended with a love set in Pacific's favor.
Wong and Kawamura defeated Roos and Kleinman 8-4 in the No. 2 doubles match and Furuya and Schlack paired up for the first time this year to defeat Brewer and Joel Trousdale 8-3.
The Boxers next travel to Newberg to face George Fox. Each team has one conference loss to Whitman, so the winner will have sole possession of second place in the NWC. Saturday's match is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start, but could be pushed back to Sunday if foul weather persists this weekend.Boxe
