FOREST GROVE – Aaron Koford (So., Wilsonville, Ore.) and Nicole Smith (So., Wailuku, Hawaii) both find themselves in second place after the first day of the Pacific Preview decathlon and heptathlon, held at Lincoln Park Stadium.

Koford finished the first day of the decathlon with a total of 2,930 points, just four points behind Jordan Hatfield of Corban.  Koford opened the day by winning the 100 meters in a time of 11.70 seconds.  He followed that performance up with second place finishes in both the long jump, with a mark of 19 feet, 0.5 inches, and the shot put with a performance of 37 feet, 9.25 inches.

Smith, competing in only her second career heptathlon, was in fourth after the first two events with fourth place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.71 seconds and the high jump with a height of 4 feet, 5 inches.  After slipping to fifth after the shot put, Smith vaulted to second in just one race as she scored 625 points with her winning time of 28.08 seconds in the 200 meters.

Despite the surge in the 200 meters, Smith finds herself well behind leader Elizabeth Tapler of Pacific Lutheran, who finished the first four events with a score of 2,023 points.

Ted Wogan (Fr., Klamath Falls, Ore.) is in seventh place in his first collegiate decathlon with a score of 2.609 points.

The multi-events, along with the individual events of the Pacific Preview, take place on Saturday.  Field events begin at 9 a.m., with running events commencing at 10 a.m.
