Goya Wins A Pair, But Boxers Blanked By Undefeated Grinnell
Box Score
ORLANDO, Fla. –
Cathlene Goya (Sr., Kaneohe, Hawaii) was once again a two-match winner in the singles and doubles Friday, but a Pacific lineup missing three other top players couldn't keep up with an undefeated Grinnell squad as the Pioneers downed the Boxers 7-2 in women's tennis action in Orlando.
Goya picked up her ninth singles win of the season and her third in a row, taking a 6-2, 6-1 straight set decision from Sadhana Athreya in the No. 1 flight. Earlier in the day, Goya teamed with
Rachel Mizuno (Jr., Mililani, Hawaii) to score an 8-6 victory over Athreya and Laura Krull.
Grinnell, however, overpowered most of the Pacific lineup to improve to 18-0 on the year. Pacific is playing their three-match Florida trip without
Megan Yoshimoto (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii),
Lillian Do (Fr., Beaverton, Ore.) and
Kelsey Trujillo (So., Honolulu, Hawaii), all of whom did not make the trip due to class conflicts.
Mizuno, playing up in the No. 2 singles flight in place of Yoshimoto, fell 6-1, 6-4 to Shirlene Luk while
Amber Craviotto (Fr., Eugene, Ore.) dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match to Toby Cain at No. 3.
Kelsey Lack (So., Grants Pass, Ore.) dropped a 6-2, 6-0 match to Clothilde Thirouin at No. 4 and
Mary Dang (Fr., Portland, Ore.) fell to Emma Macdonald at No. 5, 6-0, 6-1.
Rachel Palmer (So., Estacada, Ore.) fell in the only three-set match of the day, winning the second frame before dropping a closely played tiebreaker set to Kalena Maknui at No. 6, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.
In doubles, Cain and Macdonald combined for an 8-1 victory over Craviotto and Lack at No. 2 while Makanui and Catherine Fitch scored an 8-4 win over Dang and Palmer at No. 3.
Pacific will conclude their three-match Florida trip on Tuesday as they will meet Whittier at noon (EDT).
