BOXERS WILL BE IN FORCE AS NWC CHAMPIONSHIPS AWAIT
Pacific track and field's presence at the Northwest Conference Championships as two qualifiers added from Saturday's Luau Meet brings the team's total to 19 men and 15 women. The annual NWC Championships begin Friday at 2 p.m., on the campus of Pacific Lutheran University and continue at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday.
BOXER BYTES
• Pacific finished with nine event winners in their own Pacific Luau Meet on Saturday at Lincoln Park Stadium. Jenna Matsumoto led the way with dual event victories in the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles. Her time of 1:06.67 in the 400-meter hurdles is a season best.
• The Pacific men also won both hurdles races. Michael Hunker won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.98 seconds while Ted Wogan captured the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 58.05 seconds.
• Trey Oshiro-Atabay became one of two NWC Championships qualifiers the Boxers earned during the meet when he won the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 7.25 inches. The effort was a season best by nearly 18 inches. Matthew Dodier was the other, qualifying in the 100 meters in a time of 11.45 seconds.
• Other Pacific event winners at the Pacific Luau Meet included Kelson Kawai in the triple jump,
Aaron Koford in the discus, Nicole Smith in the javelin and the men's 400-meter relay team.
• Nicole Smith has qualified for four events at the NWC Championships and will compete in three to lead the Boxers. She will compete in the 200 meters, long jump and javelin and could compete in both relays. Smith also earned the Pacific women's first two points of the meet with her seventh place finish in the heptathlon at last week's NWC Multi-Event Championships.
• The men's and women's hurdles events will have a lot of red and black. Pacific has qualified five competitors in the men's 110-meter hurdles and four in both the men's 110-meter hurdles and the women's 400-meter hurdles. The Boxers also have two competitors in the women's 100-meter hurdles.
LAST WEEK'S MEET RECAP
PACIFIC LUAU MEET
Jenna Matsumoto (Sr., Kailua, Hawaii) won both women's hurdles races Saturday, leading seven total Pacific event winners in the Pacific Luau Meet at Lincoln Park Stadium.
Matsumoto cruised to the win in the Boxers' final tune-up before next week's Northwest Conference Championships. She took the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 16.34 seconds, finishing nearly a second ahead of second place Kori Bellwood (So., Yamhill, Ore.). Matsumoto then completed a four-second victory in the 400-meter hurdles, pulling away with a time of 1:06.67.
Nicole Smith (Sr., Wailuku, Hawaii) captured the javelin just four days after competing in the NWC Multi-Event Championships. One of four individual events she is qualified for at the NWC Championships, Smith finished with a throw of 112 feet, 3 inches. Smith also finished third in the long jump, just missing her season best with a leap of 16 feet, 10.75 inches.
The Pacific men also earned a sweep in the hurdles races. Michael Hunker (Jr., Cornelius, Ore.) took the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.98 seconds to lead a top-four sweep for the Boxers. Daniel Wagner (Fr., Kailua, Hawaii) finished second in 16.07 seconds while Ted Wogan (Fr., Klamath Falls, Ore.) and Kamu Morita (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) tied for third as each clocked 16.25 seconds. PACIFIC NEWS & NOTES
NO STUMBLING BLOCK IN THE HURDLES: Jenna Matsumoto is coming into the NWC Championships primed to have her best races at the right time. Matsumoto was a two-event winner at Saturday's Pacific Luau Meet as she won both women's hurdles races. She won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.34 seconds and then won the 400-meter hurdles in a season best time of 1:06.67. Matsumoto stands a good chance of repeating her performance from the 2011 conference meet where she scored points in both races. She enters the meet with the league's No. 9 time in the 100-meter hurdles of 16.15 seconds and the fourth best time in the 400-meter hurdles.
Matsumoto will have a lot of company in both hurdles races. Pacific has qualified four women in the 400-meter hurdles as Kori Bellwood, Jessica Head (So., North Bend, Ore.) and Chloe Hallyburton (Jr., Dayton, Ore.) all went under the meet's qualifying time of 1:15.24. Bellwood has the conference's fifth best time in the 400-meter hurdles of 1:07.44, which she ran at the Mar. 16 Pacific Preview.
IN THE MEN'S HURDLES: The NWC Championships men's hurdles races will also have a lot of red and black in them. Pacific has qualified five men in the 110-meter hurdles, with four of those five qualifiers owning NWC top-10 times. Michael Hunker leads the way, owning the third best time of 15.54 seconds which he ran at the Mar. 18 Oregon Preview. Hunker won the 110-meter hurdles at the Pacific Luau Meet in a time of 15.98 seconds. Hunker finished third in the event at the 2011 NWC Championships, earning All-NWC honors. Daniel Wagner has the NWC's fourth fastest time in the event of 15.71 seconds, ran at the Apr. 7 Linfield Jenn Boyman Memorial Invitational. The pair will be joined by Andy Harris (Fr., Midvale, Utah), who owns the league's ninth fastest time, Ted Wogan, who ranks 10th, and Kamu Morita, who enters with the conference's 11th fastest time.
AND IN THE 400-METER HURDLES...: Pacific's men will also see three competitors in the 400-meter hurdles. Ted Wogan has the sixth fastest time in the event with a time of 57.80 seconds. Wogan was a winner in the 400-meter hurdles at the Pacific Luau Meet with a time of 58.05 seconds. Michael Hunker and Daniel Wagner are also qualified for the 400-meter hurdles. Hunker has the NWC's 12th best time of 58.89 seconds, while Wagner ranks 13th at 59.00 seconds.
SMITH PREPARES FOR TRIO OF EVENTS: Thanks to her newfound abilities in the heptathlon, Nicole Smith finds herself preparing for a trio of events at the NWC Championships, but not one of the ones in which she was a top competitor in the 2011 meet. Smith will compete in the 200 meters, long jump and javelin at the meet and could take part in both relay races. Smith enters the meet with the sixth best mark in the long jump with her leap of 17 feet and seventh best mark in the javelin with a mark of 117 feet, 10 inches. In addition, she enters with a time of 27.10 secnds in the 200 meters. Smith has also qualified in the 100 meters, in which she finished fifth at last year's NWC Championships. Smith has already scored two points for the Pacific women as they enter the meet thanks to her seventh place finish in the heptathlon at the NWC Multi-Event Championships. Her score is third best in Pacific history and was just her third career multi-event competition.
LAST CHANCE QUALIFIERS: A pair of Pacific men succeeded in earning qualifying marks for the NWC Championships in their last chance. Trey Oshiro-Atabay earned a qualifying mark in the long jump with a huge season best, winning the event at the Pacific Luau Meet with a leap of 21 feet, 7.25 inches. The mark is the fifth best in the conference entering the conference meet. In addition, Matthew Dodier (Fr., Portland, Ore.) gave Pacific third qualifier in the 100 meters with his time of 11.45 seconds at the Pacific Luau Meet.
BOXERS AIMING TO CLIMB RESULTS LADDER: With the marked increase in qualifiers, Pacific hopes that they can move up in the results at the NWC Championships. The Pacific men finished sixth at the 2011 championships with a score of 57 points and finished just 11 points behind fifth place Linfield. The Pacific women placed eighth in the 2011 meet with 42 points.
QUALIFYING STANDARDS CHANGE: For the first time this season, there will not an “A” and “B” qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III Championships. In 2012, the top-20 declared men's athletes and the top-22 declared women's athletes, in addition to the top-16 declared relay teams, will earn entry into the meet. Qualifiers to the NWC Championships will still need to meet a pre-established qualifying standard.
