FOREST GROVE – The Pacific men's tennis team got a sweep of doubles for the second consecutive match and added in a singles sweep for good measure.
In fact, it was a clean sweep as the Boxers took every set from visiting Puget Sound on the way to a 9-0 Northwest Conference victory at Holce Tennis Courts on Friday.
The most competitive singles match came at No. 2, where Pacific's
Spencer Hing (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz.) got past Michael Cutter 6-4, 7-5. Puget Sound made some noise in one other set, but the Boxers' No. 4 player
Scott Kawamura (Aiea, Hawaii) raced past John Stevens in a first-set tiebreak, then carried the momentum into the second set in a 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 victory.
“It was a great win by Spencer,” said Pacific head coach
Brian Jackson. “He beat a very solid player in a tight match. He showed some of the strong play that he started the season with.”
Having already beaten Puget Sound (1-8 NWC, 1-12 overall) by the same score in a season-opening match, Pacific (8-1, 9-5) used the rematch as an opportunity to rest a couple of players and give others and opportunity to compete.
Hector Alcayde (Sr., Wahiawa, Hawaii) took advantage of his opportunity in the No. 6 flight by steaming past Michael Teau in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.
“Hector got a well-deserved starting position today and made the most of it,” said Jackson. “He played really well.”
While
Giancarlo Battaglia (Fr., Sherman Oaks, Calif.) sat out singles, fellow frosh
Brandon Schlack (Fr., Long Beach, Calif.) moved up to No. 3 and had no problem with George Murphy, winning 6-2, 6-2. Battaglia did compete in doubles, as he and No. 1 partner
Troy Zuroske (So., Richland, Wash.) easily handled Cutter and Ben Miller 8-1. Zuroske also pasted Miller in the No 1 singles match, winning 6-2, 6-1.
The most competitive doubles match came in the No. 2 flight, where Hing and Schlack fought off Murphy and Jake Peterson for an 8-5 victory. Kawamura teamed with
Kolin Wong (Captain Cook, Hawaii) to dismiss Abe Noyes and Stevens in the No. 3 match, 8-3.
The Boxers take another break from NWC competition on Saturday in their annual Alumni Match, which begins at 1:00 p.m. at Holce Tennis Courts. Then it's back to NWC play on Sunday when Pacific faces Lewis & Clark for their third match in three days. The start time for that match has been moved up to 9:30 a.m.
