Doubles Momentum Doesn't Hold In Tough Loss To Loggers

TACOMA, Wash. – The momentum gained by winning two of three doubles sets could not be carried through to the singles Friday as Puget Sound fought back to take four of the six singles flights and score a 5-4 victory over the Boxers in Northwest Conference women's tennis action at the UPS Tennis Pavilion.
 
The Boxers (6-11, 5-7 NWC), battling against the Loggers for the potential No. 4 position for the upcoming NWC Tournament, opened the day with a pair of convincing doubles victories to take a 2-1 lead.  Cathlene Goya (Sr., Kaneohe, Hawaii) and Megan Yoshimoto (Sr., Mililani, Hawaii) earned their eighth victory of the year in the No. 1 flight with an 8-2 win over Madison Holtz and Josie Dow.  The No. 2 tandem of the Kelsey Trujillo (So., Honolulu, Hawaii) and Lillian Do (Fr., Beaverton, Ore.) added an 8-4 win over Logan Thompson and Marissa Friedman.
 
The Loggers (8-8, 7-5 NWC) got on the board in the No. 3 match as Ada Vu and Maddie Theisse were 8-6 winners over Rachel Mizuno (Jr., Mililani, Hawaii) and Amber Craviotto (Fr., Eugene, Ore.).
 
Goya and Yoshimoto carried their winning ways over to the singles flights.  Goya improved to 12-4 on the year with her 6-0, 6-1 victory over Holtz in the No. 1 flight, while Yoshimoto collected her seventh win of the year at No. 2, outlasting Jenna Gardner in a three battle at No. 2, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.
 
Thompson was an easy 6-0, 6-0 winner over Mizuno in the No. 3 flight, while Dow held off a three-set challenge by Do at No. 4 to take the 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win.  Theisse was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Trujillo at No. 5 while Friedman was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Craviotto at No. 6.
 
Pacific will wrap up their 2012 regular season at home next Friday when they host Pacific Lutheran at the Holce Tennis Courts.  Match start is scheduled for 2 p.m.
