BOXERS GROW IN CALIFORNIA, BUT CONTINUE TO LOOK FOR WIN NO. 1
The Pacific volleyball team's trip to the Cal-Lu-Fornia Invitational allowed the Boxers to grow together, but returned home from Thousand Oaks still in search for their first win under head coach Kip Yoshimura.  The Boxers return to the Northwest to play at Concordia (Ore.) on Wednesday before opening Northwest Conference play at home against George Fox on Friday and at Willamette on Saturday.

BOXER BYTES
• Pacific dropped both of their opening matches at the Cal-Lu-Fornia Invitational on Friday.  The Boxers fell in three sets to Chapman (25-19, 25-12, 25-15) and dropped a four-set decision to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (25-19, 22-25, 25-11, 25-16).

• The Boxers played perhaps their best match of the weekend in the opener on Saturday, taking tournament host and No. 6 ranked Cal Lutheran to five sets before falling 24-26, 25-22, 25-16, 21-25, 15-8.  It was the first time in six matches this season that the Regals had been pushed to five sets.

• The final match of the tournament saw Pacific assemble their best attacking performance with a .188 hitting percentage, but back-to-back matches took away the team's stamina in taking a three-set loss to La Verne (25-21, 25-14, 25-22).

Mariah McHolland put together Pacific's best offensive performance of the weekend, registering 33 kills, an average of 2.20 kills per set, nine blocks and a team best .319 hitting percentage.  She finished with 10 kills against both Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday and Cal Lutheran on Saturday.

Marie Rewick continued her exceptional collegiate start, finshing with team-leading totals of 36 kills and 27 digs.  Rewick scored her second double-double of the season with her 16 kills and 11 digs in the loss to Cal Lutheran.

Emily Farnham has excelled as the Boxers' primary setter, finishing with 121 assists in the four matches.  Farnham enters the week ranked seventh in the NWC with 7.77 assists per set.

PACIFIC NEWS & NOTES
McHOLLAND MAKES GOOD:
Pacific turned to one of their most experienced players to set the pace in the four-match Cal-Lu-Fornia Invitational.  Mariah McHolland (Jr., Renton, Wash.) amassed a .319 hitting percentage in the four matches with 33 kills and 2.20 kills per set.  She also added three service aces, seven digs and nine blocks.  McHolland's best performance came in the five-set loss to No. 6 Cal Lutheran on Saturday with 10 kills, a .421 hitting percentage and two digs.  She also had 10 kills against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday to go along with two digs and two blocks.  McHolland enters the week leading the Boxers and ranking fifth in the NWC with a .260 hitting percentage.  She also leads Pacific with 15 blocks and an average of 0.68 blocks per set.

CONTINUING HER STRONG START: The second week of collegiate volleyball for Marie Rewick (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) was just as good as the first.  Rewick finished with 36 kills and 2.40 kills per set to go along with 27 digs and four blocks.  She turned in her best performance against No. 6 Cal Lutheran on Saturday, finishing with 16 kills, a .303 hitting percentage and 11 digs to notch her second double-double of the season.  Rewick finished the trip by sharing the team lead with Mariah McHolland with seven kills in the loss to La Verne.  Rewick enters the week leading the Boxers with 56 kills, 2.55 kills per set and 51 digs.  She enters the week ranked ninth in the NWC with her 2.55 kills per set.

SET-UP GIRL: The setter can be the most critical part of the offense and Emily Farnham (Fr., University Place, Wash.) has stepped in well in her first year in Head Coach Kip Yoshimura's system.  Farnham finished with 121 assists in the Boxers' four matches in Southern California, averaging 8.07 assists per set.  She had her first collegiate double-double in the loss to Cal Lutheran, finishing with 40 assists and 13 digs.  Farnham enters the week ranks sixth in the Northwest Conference with her average of 7.77 assists per set (171 total) in the Boxers' six matches.

STAYING DEFENSIVE: Pacific entered the 2012 season with six defensive specialists on the roster, but continue to be without the services of Jade Thompson (Sr., Marysville, Wash.), who is still recovering from an off-season knee injury.  In her stead, Becky Sheller (Fr., Gresham, Ore.) has carried much of the load as the Boxers' starting libero.  In six matches, Sheller is averaging 5.50 digs per set (101 total), ranking her fifth in the NWC.  Like many of her teammates, Sheller established her season high of 27 digs in the Boxers' loss to No. 6 Cal Lutheran.

PROGRESS TOWARDS RANKED TEAMS: So far this season, Pacific has played their best volleyball against ranked programs.  In their opening weekend, the Boxers took No. 23 ranked Occidental to four sets in a match at George Fox on Sept. 1.  The match included a 25-23 loss in the first set and a 26-24 victory in the third set.  On Saturday, the Boxers took No. 6 ranked Cal Lutheran to five sets on their home court, taking the first and fourth set from the Regals.

PACIFIC PICKED SEVENTH IN NWC PRESEASON POLL: Northwest Conference coaches have picked Pacific seventh in the NWC this season in the preseason poll released in August.  The Boxers received 24 of a possible 80 points on the poll to finish three points ahead of Willamette and six points behind George Fox.  Pacific Lutheran is selected to ovetake 2011 NWC champion Whitworth for the conference crown, receiving five first place votes and a total of 65 points.  The Pirates earned two first place votes and 54 points while Puget Sound is picked third with 50 points and one first place vote.  Lewis & Clark was picked fourth with 44 points while Linfield is fifth with 35 points.
