Boxers Catch Tigers By The Tail With Awesome Hitting Night

FOREST GROVE – A pair of spectacular hitting performances, including a near record mark for
Marie Rewick (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii), led Pacific to a five-set upset of No. 17 Colorado College, 25-15, 27-25, 23-25, 18-25, 15-11, in volleyball action at the Stoller Center.
Rewick came alive for 27 kills to finish one short of the school single match record of 28 set by Jill Peacock in 2007 and also had an impressive .349 hitting percentage. She added 20 digs and a block as the Boxers (5-9) hit .203 as a team for the match.
Alexa Block (Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) added an also impressive total of 23 kills and a .340 hitting percentage to go along with a pair of blocks.
Mariah McHolland (Jr., Renton, Wash.) added 12 kills and seven blocks,
Megan Zablan (Fr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) had 60 assists and
Becky Sheller (Fr., Gresham, Ore.) added 24 digs.
Emily Phillips led Colorado College (11-5) with a double-double of 14 kills and 13 digs. Courtney Birkett came off the bench to finish with 12 kills. Devon Lucero had 43 assists and Laura Goldsmith had 14 digs.
Pacific came out unafraid of the Tigers' national ranking in the opening set, jumping out to the 9-4 lead on Rewick's first kill of the night. Block then contributed to a string of four straight points with a pair of kills to build a 17-8 lead. Pacific built the lead to 10 points when
Hannah Smargiassi's (Fr., Tualatin, Ore.) kill made it 24-14. Rewick then closed it out for the 25-15 win.
The Boxers try to put the set away early again in the second, using a block by McHolland and
Hannah Herbert (Fr., Hillsboro, Ore.) to build the 8-2 lead. Pacific made it an 18-10 lead on a Tigers' attack error before Colorado College started a spirited comeback. A strong of three Pacific attack errors made it a 22-19 game. The Pacific lead was 24-21 when the Tigers scored three straight points to tie it at 24-24. The set went to 25-25 before kills by Rewick and Herbert closed it in favor of the Boxers.
Colorado College tried to pull away early in the third set, going ahead 9-4 on a block by Lucero and Lauren Hahn. The Boxers rallied to tie the set at 16-16 on Block's kill. Things remained tied at 22-22 before the Tigers won three of the last four points, taking the 25-23 win on a Pacific service error.
Pacific had the early lead in the fourth set, going up 11-9 on a Block kill. Colorado College took control from there, tying the set at 11-1 on Jessica Bryson's kill and vaulted off to the 16-12 advantage on a Birkett kill. The Boxers came back within a point on a block by McHolland and
Leah Andrews (Fr., Vashon Island, Wash.) before the Tigers went on to score eight of the last 10 points. Bryson's kill gave the Tigers the 25-18 win to force the deciding set.
The Boxers never trailed in the fifth, taking an 8-5 lead on Rewick's kill. McHolland made it an 11-7 lead as the Boxers never looked back in taking the win.
Pacific takes to the road for a three-match road trip, traveling to Whitworth on Friday and Whitman on Saturday. Colorado College wraps up a four-match Northwest road swing with a match against No. 10 ranked Puget Sound on Sunday in Portland.
