Leopards Score Two in Second Half to Run by Boxers
LA VERNE, Calif.- Alex Arrington (So., Portland, Ore.) scored in the first half, but Boxers could not capitalize on opportunities in second half on Tuesday night in a 3-1 men's soccer loss against La Verne at Ortmayer Stadium.
Arrington scored in the 16th minute giving the Boxers the 1-0 on a ball that was deflected on a goalkeeper header. The Boxers shot six times in the first half, which didn't create much action offensively for the Boxers, but played solid defense as they held the Leopards to only seven shots first half shots.
La Verne capitalized on one specific shot in the first half in the 20th minute. Ryan Estrada found Abdullah Alharshan through the box. Alharshan shot from 10 yards out and found the back of the net to tie the game 1-1.
Estrada picked up the game-winner and an insurance goal for the Leopards in the second half. In the 48th minute, Estrada took a cross from David Gonzalez to fire the ball past goalkeeper Michael Summers (Jr., Beaverton, Ore.). Estrada would again score in the 71st minute on a breakaway, shooting from five yards out.
The Boxers outshot the Leopards 18-10 for the contest, with Arrington recording four. La Verne goalkeeper Richard Duran tallied 10 saves, including eight in the second half. Summer (0-3) collected the loss in goal with three saves.
The Boxers (0-3-0) return to the Northwest play Walla Walla on Friday at 3 p.m., before playing their home opener on Sunday against Oregon Tech on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
