BOXERS LOOK FOR FIRST WIN OF YEAR IN CALIFORNIA
After opening the Kip Yoshimura era with a couple of losses, the Pacific volleyball team will aim to earn their first win on their longest road trip of the season.  The Boxers travel to Thousand Oaks, Calif., for the Posada Royale Cal-Lu-Fornia Invitational.  Pacific will face Chapman and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday, followed by host Cal Lutheran and La Verne on Saturday.

BOXER BYTES
• Pacific needed a couple of sets on Friday to shake off some first match jitters with a starting lineup that included four freshmen.  The Boxers dropped the opener in a non-conference tilt with George Fox, 25-19, 25-22, 25-22.

• Pacific rebounded to take a set off of No. 23 Occidental on Saturday in a match played at George Fox's Wheeler Sports Center.  The Tigers held strong, however, to take the 25-23, 15-25, 26-24, 25-20.

Marie Rewick excelled for the Boxers in her first two collegiate matches, finishing with 20 kills and 24 digs in the two matches.  She registered the Boxers' first double-double of the season on Saturday, finishing with 11 kills and 18 digs against Occidental.

Alexa Block came back from a shoulder injury strong, finishing with 12 kills and five blocks in the two matches.  Keahi Braginsky-Ahloo also turned in a strong performance with 14 kills and 17 digs in the two matches.

• Pacific started four freshmen in head coach Kip Yoshimura's first match on Friday.  Six of the team's eight freshmen saw action in the opening weekend.

PACIFIC NEWS & NOTES
WELCOME TO PACIFIC, MARIE:
In a week of many first for the Boxers, Marie Rewick (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) has made the biggest impression.  Rewick led the Boxers in their opening two matches with totals of 20 kills, 24 digs, two blocks and a .196 hitting percentage.  She opened her collegiate career with nine kills, six digs and a .273 hitting percentage in the Boxers' Friday loss to George Fox.  She then scored the Boxers' first double-double of the season when she finished with 11 kills and 18 digs in the four-set loss to No. 23 Occidental.  Rewick comes to Pacific from the Punahou School in Honolulu, where she helped lead the school to the 2011 Hawaii state championship.

A STRONG RETURN: Alexa Block (Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) worked hard to be back at full strength after spending her off-season recovering from a shoulder injury.  Block showed why she was an Honorable Mention All-NWC outside hitter in 2011 in the Pacific opener on Friday, finishing with eight kills, three blcoks and a .278 hitting percentage in the loss to George Fox.  On Saturday, Block came up with four blocks in a reserve role against Occidental.  Block finished the weke with 12 kills and five blocks.  Block, a four-year starter for the Boxers, missed the final eight matches of the 2011 season with her shoulder injury.

BRAGGIN' ON BRAGINSKY-AHLOO: One of six returners to the team from last year, Keahi Braginsky-Ahloo (Jr., Wahiawa, Hawaii) used her experience to give the Boxers some offense at outside hitter.  Braginsky-Ahloo finished the week with 14 kills, averaging two kills per set, to go along with 17 digs.  She opened with eight kills against George Fox on Friday along with five digs.  She was limited to four kills against Occidental on Saturday, but also finished with two assists and 12 digs.  Braginsky-Ahloo made 13 starts in 18 matches in 2011, missing seven matches with an injury.

ADD NEWCOMERS: First year Head Coach Kip Yoshimura gave his newest players a chance to shape the future of Pacific volleyball over the first week.  The Boxers' starting lineup on Friday included four newcomers to the program, including setter Emily Farnham (Fr., University Place, Wash.), outside hitter Marie Rewick, middle blocker Hannah Smargiassi (Fr., Tualatin, Ore.) and libero Becky Sheller (Fr., Gresham, Ore.).  Farnham, Rewick and Smargiassi also started on Saturday against Occidental while Tiana Greenhalgh (Fr., Yucaipa, Calif.) also earned the start against the Tigers.

PACIFIC PICKED SEVENTH IN NWC PRESEASON POLL: Northwest Conference coaches have picked Pacific seventh in the NWC this season in the preseason poll released in August.  The Boxers received 24 of a possible 80 points on the poll to finish three points ahead of Willamette and six points behind George Fox.  Pacific Lutheran is selected to ovetake 2011 NWC champion Whitworth for the conference crown, receiving five first place votes and a total of 65 points.  The Pirates earned two first place votes and 54 points while Puget Sound is picked third with 50 points and one first place vote.  Lewis & Clark was picked fourth with 44 points while Linfield is fifth with 35 points.
