Shooting Suffers In Second Half, Boxers Can’t Close Out Pios

FOREST GROVE – Alex Pfefferle (Jr., Twin Falls, Idaho) went off for 18 points and the Pacific women's basketball team shot 40 percent from the field, but was not enough to outlast Lewis & Clark, suffering a 80-56 loss on Tuesday evening at the Pamplin Sports Center.
 
Pfefferle shot 7 of 10 from the field and was perfect from beyond the arc, 4 of 4. She grabbed two rebounds, one block and collected three steals in 25 minutes. Kaila Johnson (So., McKinleyville, Calif.) was 4 of 9 from the field and 3 of 6 from the three-point line. She also tallied two steals in 29 minutes.
 
The Boxers played a tough first half as Heather Hitch (Sr., Enumclaw, Wash.) opened the scoring for the Boxers with a layup, but were still down by one in the first minute and half due to a Pio trey. The Pios would go on to lead by six with 16:39 left to play in the first half, but Pfefferle made her first of four treys, cutting the Pio lead to three.
 
The Boxers came within two after Johnson's first trey of the game with 15 minutes left to play in the first half. But the Pios escaped 5-0 run for the next three minutes. The Boxers cut the Pio lead to four after another Johnson three with the score at 15-11. The Pios went on another run of 6-0, leading the Boxers 21-11 before the Boxers made their way back into the first half.
 
Pfefferle made her second trey of the evening with 10:46 to play in the first half. With four and half minutes left, Hitch scored two to cut the Pio lead to four, 29-25. Pfefferle would bring the Pio lead down to two with her third three-pointer of the night with 2:28 to play until halftime. Lewis & Clark's Kristina Williams made a jumper to bring the lead back up to four, but a Pfefferle jumper brought the Boxers back within two. With three seconds left until half, Katie Andersen threw up a three to put the Pios ahead 35-30 heading into the second half.
 
Pfefferle opened the second half with her final trey of the night and a little over a minute later she tied the game up with a pass from Hitch. The Pios regained the lead for the rest of the game at 17:51 with a jumper. The Pios led by 15 with 14:23 left to play. At 12:15, Johnson sunk a jumper and 45 second later Hitch sunk a jumper to cut the Pio lead to nine, 51-42. The Pios racked up the lead to 16 at 9:34 after a Katie Anderson trey. With 8:24 left to play, Hitch cut the lead to 11, but the Boxers saw the rest of the game get away. The Pios led by 26 with 38 seconds left to play and Anuhea Wall (So., Kealakekua, Hawaii) made two free throws to bring the Pio lead to 24, 80-56.
 
The Boxers shot 50 percent in the first half (12 of 24) and 66.7 percent from beyond the arc (6 of 9). The Boxers saw their shooting decrease in the second half as they only shot 32.1 percent from the field and 30 percent from the three-point line. Overall, the Boxers shot 40.4 percent from the field, 47.4 percent from beyond the arc and 50 percent from the free throw line.
 
Hitch added nine points and five rebounds in 31 minutes of play. Paige Jensen (Sr., Bemidji, Minn.) grabbed five rebounds and four steals. Olivia Cook (So., Beaverton, Ore.) picked up four assists.
 
The Boxers (10-5, 3-4 NWC) return home on Saturday to play host to another tough matchup with Puget Sound. Tip off is at 6 p.m.
