FOREST GROVE – In a season where the Pacific men's wrestling team has shown great growth, tonight's victory will go down as a milestone showing how much the team has improved.

No. 2 (NAIA) ranked Southern Oregon took just the sixth loss in the longtime series between the two schools as the Boxers scored bonus points in three of their five wins to score 27-18 victory over the Raiders Thursday night at the Stoller Center.

While the Raiders left their starters at home in Ashland, the Boxers stepped up prepared to take on whatever talent the perennial wrestling power put on the mat.  After the teams traded forfeits to open the match, Ryan Baxter (So., Craig, Alaska) opened competition by winning his 10th match at 141 pounds.  Carrying a 4-0 lead into the third round against Woong Kim, Baxter scored a pair of nearfalls to notch his third major decision of the season, 12-1.

Southern Oregon came back to score decisions in the next two bouts to take their only lead of the night, 12-10.  Trinity Castner was an 8-3 winner over Will Patrick (Fr., Sitka, Alaska) and Craig Trask was a 5-0 winner over Dillon Ford (So., Montesano, Wash.).

Bruce Balcita (Jr., Myrtle Creek, Ore.) followed by winning the first of four straight matches that secured the victory for the Boxers.  Balcita ensured bonus points after two periods and rolled to his 16th win of the season with a 12-2 major decision over Reed Tennyson at 165 pounds.

It was Michael Tyner (So., Aloha, Ore.), though, that had the pivotal match of the evening.  Tyner grinded out a pair of takedowns in the opening two periods against T.J. Callaway and held on to finish off the 5-2 victory.  The victory was Tyner's sixth win of the season and improved to 3-1 in dual meets.

Caleb Malychewski (Jr., Camas, Wash.) wrestled up one weight class at 197 pounds after the Raiders forfeited at 184 pounds and continued his dominant run, blowing past Ethan Hinton with four takedowns as he wrapped up the Boxers' night with a 12-1 major decision.  Bubba Owens closed the match out with a 53-second heavyweight pin over Evan Schreurs (Jr., Duvall, Wash.).

With the win, Pacific improved to 6-6 in dual meets.  Southern Oregon dropped to 8-3.

Pacific returns to action at home on Sunday as they host the Boxer Open at the Stoller Center.  Wrestling begins at 10 a.m.  The Boxers wrestle their final dual meet next Thursday as they host Clackamas CC at 6 p.m.
