Boxers Come Up Just Short In Hard Fought Clackamas Dual
Video Highlights
FOREST GROVE – Bonus point victories by
Eric Harder (So., Bethesda, Md.) and
Bruce Balcita (Jr., Myrtle Crrek, Ore.) and a gutsy decision by
Ryan Baxter (So., Craig, Alaska) kept Pacific in the match, but three pins allowed Clackamas CC to get by the Boxers 29-21 in men's wrestling action at the Stoller Center.
The Boxers won a total of four matches on the night and opened up a 13-11 lead four bouts into the dual.
Dillon Ford (So., Ontesano, Wash.) opened the night at 157 pounds by just missing a bonus points win himself, riding two takedowns and a nearfall to score a 7-1 decision over Bruno Becerra.
Balcita followed with a dominant victory to improve to 17-8 on the year, shutting out Nico Hughes at 165 pounds for the 8-0 major decision. Trent Noon took five points back in Clackamas' first win on the night, needing two periods of the 174-pound bout to blank
Michael Tyner (So., Aloha, Ore.) in a 15-0 technical fall.
Caleb Malychewski (Jr., Camas, Wash.) appeared on his way to his 23rd victory of the season, taking an 8-1 lead after two rounds against Conn. Choosing the down position entering the third, Conn powered his way to an escape and in quick order Malychewski found himself on his back and the victim of a sudden fall. Malychewski fell to 22-6 on the year and took his first loss of the season by anything other than decision.
After Pacific accepted a forfeit at 197 pounds, the Cougars took control for good with a 12-point swing. Jacob Mitchell needed just over four-and-a-half minutes to score a pin over
Evan Schreurs (Jr., Duvall, Wash.) and built a 23-13 lead on a forfeit at 125 pounds.
Clackamas' Gabe Goodrich proved little match for Harder, who earned his 19th win of the season by scoring six takedowns and two nearfalls en route to a 19-4 technical fall at 133 pounds. Harder then used sheer guts to earn his 11th win of the year, escaping from a takedown from AJ Ballard midway through the third period and leaving 1 minute, 1 second on the riding time clock to break the tie for the 8-7 win.
Beau Roberts secured the win for the Cougars, dominating his match with
Will Patrick (Fr., Sitka, Alaska) to score a second round pin.
Pacific dropped to 6-7 overall with the dual meet loss. Clackamas CC, coached by former Pacific wrestler Josh Rhoden, finished their dual meet season at 7-4.
Pacific will send a select number of their top wrestlers east this weekend, competing Saturday at the North Country Open at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn. The Boxers continue their dual meet schedule on Feb. 9, traveling to Ashland for rematches with Simpson (Calif.) and Southern Oregon.
