BOXERS LOOK FORWARD TO STRING OF THREE HOME DUALS
After opening January with a close 20-17 road loss to Highline CC, the Pacific men's wrestling team hope to get back on the winning track as they enjoy three home dual meets this weekend.  The Boxers will host a pair of NCAA Division II schools on Friday as they dual Simon Fraser and San Francisco State.  Pacific will then host No. 18 (NJCAA) ranked Southwestern Oregon CC on Sunday.

BOXER BYTES
• Pacific saw a 17-7 lead after six matches fade away in the upper weights on Saturday as Highline CC won the last four matches to score a 20-17 victory over the Boxers.

Eric Harder improved to 7-1 in dual meets and 14-6 overall with third round pin of Highline's Rob McKeagarie at 133 pounds.  Harder leads the Boxers with 11 matches won by greater than a decision (more than a seven-point differential).

Ryan Baxter continued his good start to the season after a late start, improving to 5-3 on the season with an 11-2 major decision over Highline's Deandre Sparks at 141 points.  Baxter enters the week with two wins by pin and one by major decision.

Caleb Malychewski took just his third loss of the season at 184 pounds, falling 6-3 to Highline's Lucas Huyber at 184 pounds.  Huyber entered the dual ranked No. 4 in the NJCAA in the 184-pound weight class.  Malychewski enters the week with a team best 16-3 overall record and a 6-2 dual meet record.

• Friday's dual against Simon Fraser is the first since the 2009-10 season and marks the first time that the Clan will wrestle the Boxers as a full-fledged NCAA Division II institution.  Simon Fraser was granted full NCAA membership in Summer 2012 after years of wrestling success at the NAIA and CIS levels.

• Friday's dual against San Francisco State will be the first competition between the Boxers and Gators since Dec. 2, 1999.  Pacific won the match 22-13.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
SIMON FRASER

The NCAA Division II Clan enter the week with a 1-9 record.  Simon Fraser went 1-5 on a recent trip to Arizona.  They opened the trip on Jan. 3 with a 29-12 victory over NAIA Embry Riddle.  Simon Fraser earned wins by Sukhan Chahai (133), Alex Stemer (149), Brock Lamb (165), Manvir Sahota (197) and Sunny Dhinsa (285).  The Clan then dropped all five matches to Division II teams at the Jan. 2 Grand Canyon duals.    The ledger included a 29-19 loss to Minnesota Moorhead, a 42-3 loss to Colorado Mesa, a 37-7 loss to Chadron State, a 34-8 loss to Colorado School of Mines and a 37-13 loss to Western State.  Updated win/loss record and statistics for the Clan were not available.  The Clan are scheduled to dual against San Francisco State in a neutral site match at the Stoller Center just prior to their dual with the Boxers.  Mike Jones is in his 35th season as Simon Fraser's head wrestling coach.  Pacific and Simon Fraser last competed in a dual on Feb. 6, 2010, with the No. 10 (NAIA) ranked Clan scoring a 28-13 win over the Boxers.

SAN FRANCISCO STATE
The NCAA Division II Gators enter the week with a 1-4 record after dropping a series of three duals last weekend to NCAA Division I schools.  Competing at the Mustang Duals at Cal Poly on Sunday, the Gators dropped a 22-17 match to Wyoming, a 28-8 decision to Columbia and a 27-15 loss to host Cal Poly.  Conrad Snell (149), Isaiah Hurtado (133), Naveed Bagheri (141), Isaiah Jimenez (165) and Richard Segovia (285) all had two wins in the three duals.  San Francisco State opened the season with a 32-9 loss at Division I Cal State Bakersfield on Dec. 9 and a 42-6 win over NAIA Simpson (Calif.) on 42-6 on Jan. 3.  Current statistics for San Francisco State were not available.  Lars Jensen is in his 30th season as San Francisco State head coach.  The Boxers and Gators last met in dual meet competition on Dec. 2, 1999, in Las Vegas, Nev., with the Boxers scoring a 22-13 victory.

SOUTHWESTERN OREGON CC
The NJCAA Lakers enter the week with a 1-4 dual meet record and were ranked No. 18 in the last NJCAA Top-25 Poll (released Dec. 21).  The Lakers last competed on Dec. 13 against the Boxers in Coos Bay, with Pacific scoring the close 24-22 victory.  SWOCC owned an 18-6 lead after six matches, but the Boxers won three of the final four matches and scored bonus points thanks to an injury default at 174 pounds and forfeits at 184 and 197 pounds.  The match opened with a pin by Daylin Ruggerio at 125 pounds.  Southwestern Oregon will dual at Clackamas CC on Saturday before coming to Forest Grove on Sunday.  Zach Martin leads SWOCC with a 10-3 record at 157 pounds.  Bryce McMahon (157) and Tyler Wooldridge (285) enter the week with 10-4 records.  Adam Whitlatch is Southwestern Oregon's head coach.

PACIFIC NEWS & NOTES
WORKING HARDER ON THE MAT:
In his sophomore season on the mat, Eric Harder (So., Bethesda, Md.) is showing that he can be a dominant force for the Boxers in the 133-pound weight class.  Harder improved his team-best dual meet record to 7-1 on the season, scoring a third round pin over Highline CC's Rob McKegarie in Saturday's dual.  The victory was Harder's fifth in a row and he has now won seven of his last eight matches.  Harder enters the week with a 14-6 overall record, second best for the Boxers.  His seven pins lead the team, but his pin on Saturday was his first since a win by fall over Chan Chao of Simpson (Calif.) on Dec. 2.  Harder finished his freshman campaign with a 12-13 record.

A BLIP ON THE RADAR: Caleb Malychewski (Jr., Camas, Wash.) took just his third loss of the season on Saturday, but don't expect the setback to affect the junior too much.  Malychewski fell victim to No. 4 (NJCAA) ranked Lucas Huyber of Highline CC, 6-3.  The three-point loss was the largest margin of loss in Malychewski's three losses on the season, all of which have come by decision.  Malychewski continues to be a dominant force the Boxers at 184 pounds.  He enters the week with a team-best 16-3 record and a 6-2 dual meet record.  Malychewski finished his sophomore season with a 23-20 overall record and a 6-6 mark in dual matches.  He finished the year with a fourth place finish in the 174-pound weight class at the NCAA Division III West Regional, missing a trip to nationals by one place.

LATE START, BUT CERTAINLY NOT SLOW: Ryan Baxter (So., Craig, Alaska) may have had a late start to the wrestling season, but his start has been anything but slow for the Boxers.  Joining the team late due to his participation on the Pacific cross country team, Baxter enters the with a 5-3 record.  His first competiton of the season did not take place until the Boxers' duals against Highline CC and Simpson (Calif.) on Dec. 2.  Over the weekend, Baxter won his third straight match by scoring an 11-2 decision over Deandre Sparks of Highline CC.  All three matches in the current win streak have come with bonus points, which includes pins over Trent Lyons of Loras and Paxon Fowloer of Baker (Kan.) at the Dec. 16 Wartburg Desert Duals.

THE DRIVE TO FIVE: The month of December was as successful of a month as the Boxers have had in recent history.  Pacific went 5-2 on the month and the team's five dual meet victories are the most since the Boxers' went 5-5 during the 2007-08 season.  The five wins are also the most in Head Coach Severin Walsh's tenure at Pacific, which is in his fifth year.  With eight dual matches remaining, the Boxers need just three more wins to secure their first .500 season since 2007-08 and four wins to claim their first winning dual meet record since the 1999-2000 season when Pacific finished 11-4-1.

DUALS TO BE VIDEO STREAMED: For the first time, all of Pacific's home men's and women's wrestling dual meets will be streamed via  live video webcast.  The streaming schedule continues on Jan. 11 when the matches against Simon Fraser and San Francisco State will be made available on the web.  To access the webcasts. log on to www.goboxers.com/webcasts.  The webcast will not provide an audio commentary.
