Boxers Can’t Find Back Of Net In Loss To Pios

PORTLAND, Ore. – After tallying 16 shots throughout the course of the match, the Pacific women's soccer team could not find the back of the net, suffering a 1-0 loss to Lewis & Clark in Northwest Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Griswold Stadium.
 
"We were not ready to play today," said associate head coach Dane Joseph. "Hence, they scored early. Only the people on the field can fix that."
 
Lewis & Clark scored their lone goal quick in the second minute of the match. Grace Melhaff crossed to an open Marissa Sandgren, who shot to the back of the net past Boxer keeper Kristina Morris (Fr., Mollala, Ore.).
 
In the seventh minute of the match, Kara Lankey (Fr., La Canada, Calif.) attempted to score, but the shot was save by Pioneer Keeper Geena Fong. McKenna Davidson (So., Kailu-Kona, Hawaii) shot just three minutes later, but was wide of the goal.
 
In the second half, the Boxers had more opportunities to score, including an attempt from Emily Tuffey (Jr., Valencia, Calif.) in the 56th minute, but was once again saved by Fong. Lucy Alamo (Fr., Orange County, Calif.) shot, but was blocked and rebounded into the feet of Lankey. Lankey gained control of the ball and shot, but Fong was there again to save the ball. Kamryn Plechot (Jr., La Palma, Calif.) made one last attempt in the 89th minute, but Fong was there again to catch the ball.
 
The Boxers outshot the Pioneers 16-14 with Lankey leading the way with seven shots. Morris suffered her first loss of the season in her first start between the pipes. She recorded six saves. Fong collected the victory after tallying seven saves.
 
The Boxers slip to 7-5-2 overall and 4-5-1 in the Northwest Conference. This next weekend will be the second round of the Whit's. On Friday, the Boxers will play host to Whitworth with the match starting at 5 p.m. On Sunday, they will play host Whitman. The match will start at noon.
