Missionaries Shutout Boxers With Overtime Penalty Kick

FOREST GROVE – The Pacific men's soccer team could not find the back of the net in their final home match of the season, suffering a 1-0 loss to Whitman College on Sunday afternoon in Northwest Conference action at Lincoln Park Stadium.
 
The Missionaries scored in the first overtime period, with 7:25 left to go in the game. The Boxers fouled inside the box, which resulted in giving Whitman a penalty kick. Junpei Tsuji took the kick for the Missionaries and to the back of the net, past Boxer goalkeeper Zach Cohen (Sr., Grafton, Calif.).
 
The Boxers recorded six shots in the match with only one shot in the first half. In the 12th minute of the match, Nick Rudella (Sr., Sammamish, Wash.) headed the ball, attempting to score, but Whitman goalkeeper Stuart Ellsworth was there on the save. Jake Passas (Fr., Minden, Nev.) tried in the start of the second half, but was wide. On Passas' second shot, Ellsworth was there on the save. Josh Farley (Fr., Spokane, Wash.) took a shot in the 52ndth minute, but the ball was high. Farley took another shot in the 58th minute, but Ellsworth came up big, holding the Boxers to no goals. Jorge Mandujano (Sr., Forest Grove, Ore.) attempted in the 83rd minute, but the ball went wide.
 
Cohen (1-4-1) suffered the loss, but came up with big saves throughout the match, tallying six total. With 29 minutes left in the first half, Whitman went on a run, but Cohen made a diving save to change the possession back to the Boxers. With 24 minutes left, Cohen came up big again, knocking the ball away and holding the Missionaries to no goals in regulation.
 
The Boxers drop to 6-10-1 overall and 1-9-1 in the Northwest Conference. Whitman improves to 7-8-2 overall and 6-4-1 in the NWC. This next weekend, the Boxers will travel up north to take on Pacific Lutheran on Saturday and Puget Sound on Sunday. Both matches will start at 2:30 p.m.
